Growing up in a family of Commodore lovers, and Holden lovers in general, no surprise that my first car was one. About four months ago i bought a VY Series II S, and absolutely love it. Although, i have found a few problems and have some questions hopefully some of you guys can help me with. Being a youngling my knowledge on cars and how they work is growing, but still fairly limited so some help would be awesome.
Firstly, the previous owner has had foglights fitted in and although i can see the leads are all plugged in and the reciept says that the fuse holder and relay have also been put in (i thought at first that he may have just put them in to cover up the ugly empty holes and didnt bother getting them connected) i cant seem to turn them on. The headlight switch on the dash even has the foglight symbol on it and pulls out as if to turn them on, but nothing happens. Any ideas as to why? Also i have had a rock go through one of the foggies and needs replacing, they are genuine SS foggies, any ideas on how much they will cost and where to get them from?
Secondly, at low revs, and mostly in first gear and sometimes at low revs in second (manual trans.) the commy makes a kind of high pitched noise as it revs, its really hard to explain in words. If anyone has seen the transformers movies the sound is the same as the one they make when they transform. It's not like a voilent noise or anything, and im not particularly worried about it, the commy is extremely quiet so ive put it down to having a very good muffler that makes it sound like the car has no beef, so instead of a low rumble you hear that new car revving sound. As im pretty much certain my car isn't about to turn into Optimas Prime, id love to have some light shed on what the sound is.
Lastly there is a slight shuddering coming through the steering every now and then when i go around a tight corner, nothing im too worried about, doesnt feel like im about to loose control or anything.
Anyway hopefully someone can give me some wise words, cheers, Finchy.
ok here i go :P
Fogs- New fogs i would order them from holden.. i know they are exspensive but i know of 3 other cars that used aftermarket, and they were a bugger to mount and are still not 'adjustable/globe change friendly, Genuine Holden ones area simple 3 bolt job, the cable connectors come on them,, make the front look more legit
- As for them not coming on, recheck all the fuses, if you want i can post some piccs of the locations of the fuse and relayy if needed. I wired mine all in myself, so know this process like the back of my hand
Engine- sorry mate cant help you there... post a youtube vid of it
Steering- I have the same issue, it was fixed with a voluntary recall back in the day, but have been told that the first batch of pumps was overkill, and basically it 'suprises' the rack when the turning begins.. in other wards, all is good no need to worry
Hope I could be of help mate![]()
Not sure about the fog lights or the noise however the shudder is a common problem. Try replacing the power steerign fluid and adding something like a Nulon treatment I have found this helps. There is a kit from Holden that changes the high pressure hose to a longer unit, it costs about $150 all up however I have been told by a mechanic that it may or may not fix the problem.
You will find that it usually does this at low speeds ie parking the car or 3 point turns and usually when the engine is warmed up?
I will probably buy the legit foggies, i already have legit ones in, with all the mounts and everything, but after pulling it out this arvo i was thinking it would be so much easier if i could just buy new inserts and put them in instead. I would loose the great looking SS on the front but save myself a lot of hassle, do you know if thats possible?New fogs i would order them from holden..
Yes i feel it come through sometimes in all those situations, and sometimes even when im going around like really tight corners, like turning in to a street or something. It's going in for a service this weekend, so ill see what the mech says about it.find that it usually does this at low speeds ie parking the car or 3 point turns
As for the engine noise, its really hard to describe, i might put a youtube vid up and link it in here. I'll also take my mech for a drive this weekend and see what he says.
Thanks for the help guys, cheers, Finchy.
as previously said the steering shudder is because when they came out the hose was not sufficient so to make it go away you need to replace it.
as for the noise you will probly find its just general gearbox noise (in first gear it spins faster to counteract the engine and convert it to slow moving back wheels) have you checked the fluid levels ? or considered replacing the gearbox oil (dextron III) (does it sound like a bus but softer) (or like reverse gear but softer)
I have figured out why my fog lights weren't working!
After forking out the $120 for JUST the lense insert, thankyou holden, and replacing the cracked one i had a really good look for all the wiring. After a while i finally noticed the wire tubing sneakily winding through all the nether-regions of my engine bay and up to the relay/fuse box. I then realised the relay was missing in the box. So a trip to the servo later, i popped in the relay, turned the switch... and nothing. So now so desperately wanting to know why they werent working, i pulled the fog light i had replaced BACK out to make sure i had clipped everything in. And only THEN did i even think to check the globe. Sure enough it was blown, so down to the servo i went again to buy a new one. I put it in, put the foggie back in place, flicked the switch, and walla! Oh wait.... only that one works. After a lonnnnnnnggggggg drawn out sigh, i pulled the opposite foggie out, had a look, sure enough, another blown globe. So i hit up the servo AGAIN (by this point im sure the checkout chick must of thought i had some weird fetish for her..) bought another one, put it in, and finally i have working foglights! (insert woop of joy here!).
