Gday,
Im thinking about doing your GTO Hard Wire Mod (http://www.thelug.com/radio/gtoradio.html) to my VYs Head Unit (Blaupunkt) but was just wondering if by putting a pre amp in between would it then improve the audio quality?
Ive heard that with this mod unless u have your mp3 player cranked up the volume is pretty Poor.
if this is a valid idea what type of pre amp would be recommended?
Cheers,
Luke

Have you considered phreddys mod? Much better. ... And now, Blaupunkt Aux Input! (VY/VZ)
I mean, the GTO hard wire mod looks cheap and easy, but once you start talking pre-amping, might as well just et it done properly to start?
"You want fast, reliable and cheap ? You'll find a Commodore out there that can provide any two out of those three!"
I've always hated the half arse mods.. I'm happy to report that I'm one of the beta testers for Vlads ipod integration/addon mod and couldn't be happier.. Doing the whole burn a blank audio cd ect is bs.. Vlads mod will charge/play/menu support all from the stereo Clicky. There's also asr audio that do a quality aux in and/or aux out mod. Pay the money as they are both quality addon's and either one (depending on you application) and you won't look back

How does the phreddys mod work?
Like is it similar to the mod i mentioned with a pre amp or how is it wired?
Im not gonna bother with the ipod mod as i dont have one but thanks 4 the idea :-)
Cheers
So if i was gonna do it myself i could use the mod i mentioned with a pre amp and just use a bllank cd.
Would i use a pre amp or a small amp? Eg.Universal Preamp Module M040 - 1 Channel - Jaycar Electronics Or Universal Amp 12W Module M032 - 1 Channel - Jaycar Electronics or Universal Amp 3.5W Module M031 - 1 Channel - Jaycar Electronics
Thanks heaps,
Anyone? :-)
I don't think you can use those modules except as part of a circuit (which I wouldn't know how to do) It;s not a preamp you want - you need an amp - I would think that something like this Mini-HIFI-Home-Digital-Amplifier in combination with the simple wire in mod would achieve what you want. Seems like more hassle and not much cheaper than the phreddy mod, and I would expect sound to be less clean.

Thanks for all ya help really appreciated, ive got a fair bit of money to spend (thankyou tax return :-D ) so ill give it a go and let ya know how effective it is :-)
Cheers,
Go for it - and defs let us know how it goes!

You don't really need a pre-amp as such, just a buffer (amp with a Gain of 1, input=output).
The amplification is not required unless your input source is really quiet. It's mostly just isolating the headunit from the input device.
Thanks :-)
Finally got all the parts :-) if i pull out the heaunit and mod it will i have to use the security pin when i put it back in?
I would think so - but no experience on that. Waiting to see how this goes for you.

If the head unit looses power you will have to enter the security pin.
You fight like a dairy farmer.
How appropriate. You fight like a cow.
Ok so ttoday i ran the wires, now heres the bad news, once i hooked up the mini hifi amp up to the power source aka cig lighter the amp started smoking :-\ not sure on what to do... tried to earth the amp but just smoked the power cord, any ideas?
I'm pretty sure what people said about Phreddy's mod was their ideas, now you're gunna be stuck without a headunit + no mod..
Headunit works just fine still :-) just lost a $10 amp no big deal, just wonderin how to get past this problem.
Ive got nothing against phreddy, im just trying to figure something out that works and costs alot less.
Any chance the amp was wired to the cig lighter the wrong way around? If not, the amp mighta been dud to start with?

Doubt it coz it powered up and everything. And the other weird thing is that ive had it working before.
This is what i did;
Ran 3 wires from the headunit (left, right and ground)
Split the ground wire into 2
Connected the left and right wires to the possitive left and rright outputs on the amp.
Connected both the ground wires to the negativeS left and right outputs on the amp.
Pluged in power source and turned on amp the headunit
Smoke appears.
I then pulled apart the amp to find the wires to the power switch melted/ brittle.
