VY S pac/ SS wheels size

Hi guys,

I have a VY II S with 17" wheels and 235R17 Touranza tyres fitted. I was wondering if I can fit VY SS 17" wheels with ER30 225/55R17 and 97H tyres without effecting any performance/safety.

You won't affect safety but you will affect performance, slightly worse, nothing to worry about unless you push your car to the limit every day.
For normal driving going to 55's will give you a better ride over 45series tyres.

I cannot see how fitting the higher profile tyres on the 17 inch rims will be legal. Here is why.

The correct size tyre for the 17 x 8 inch rim is 235 45 17. This gives an unloaded tyre diameter of about 644 mm. This is the factory fitment tyre size for the 17 x 8 rim and provides the correct speedo reading.

VY SS rims are 17 x 8 inches and if you fit the narrower and higher profile 225 55 17 tyre the unloaded tyre diameter increases to about 680 mm or by about 6 %. Hence with the larger diameter tyre your speedo will under-read the true road speed and you legally MUST retain speedo accuracy with whatever rim/tyre combination is fitted. Then you have the hassle and expense of re-calibrating the speedo which is a bad idea compared to fitting the correct size tyre in the first place.

Secondly, the 225 width tyre is in my opinion far too narrow for an 8 inch wide rim and is much better suited to 7 inch wide rims. Hence on VYs with 16 x 7 inch rims Holden fitted 225 50 16 tyres (approx 635 mm unloaded diameter).
