    Default Rear main seal

I suspect that I am slowly loosing oil from the rear main seal on my VY Commodore wagon. I have replaced these seals on other engines many years ago, and I would like to tackle this job however I am perhaps a bit apprehensive about taking it on. I can get access to a hoist, but I would like some feedback from someone who has done the job before.

Sure mate. It is real simple, Get tranny oil, 5-8 mates, 3 days, Lots of beer, an engine crane, a trolley jack, Ratchet rings are a must if you dont want to have an arm as sore as a 14 year old, Lots of tools, rear main seal.

Oh, and make sure your close to a good parts store

Bit of a noob question but is the rear main seal just in front of the diff? I'm slowly losing oil from somewhere too and I had my car up on a hoist, I couldn't seem to pick where.. There's oil being flicked up onto the bottom of the car from infront of the diff...

The rear main is at the back of the engine, the seal goes around the crank.

I think the center joint in the tailshaft has oil in it, might be that?

I would be taking your car to a Local Mechanic and getting them to do the Rear Main Seal.
Could cost around $450-$700 though. But IMO its a damn lot easier. A Hoist is what is needed.
Depending on how much oil is leaking, you can live with it. I needed my old VS Rear Main done but decided to live with the leak. Doesnt hurt anything, as long as it not pissing out. Just check your oil every now and then.

It will most likely be a split cv boot (drive shaft flexible rubber boot). If it's not that it will either be the trans extension housing seal where the tailshaft enters the trans or the front pinion seal where the tailshaft enters the diff
