They'll be a limit switch of sorts that closes when the glove box closes. it may be broken.

The little button that tells the lights when the glovebox is open. Top-right of glovebox?

in most cars gloveboxes, theres a little momentary push switch in the glovebox somewhere, that is depressed when it is closed and that turns off the light.
glovebox closed = switch depressed = light off so your battery doesnt go flat. ( best way i can explain it).
I'd guess the VY would have that, unless Holden went for some dicky other way of switching the glovebox light on and off. But every car ive seen has that little push switch. If that isnt it well sorry thats as much as i can help you
