After a cam, LS1 smart heads, otr & the rest mods was done I noticed a faint pinging or ticking under load noise and complained and was told not to worry. The pinging got annoying so I thought installing rollers rockers would help or the mechanic would find the fault during this installation. The noise persisted and again was told not to worry. Within a month, the pinging got so bad the car was taken back to the mechanic. The problem was a unraveled stud bolt & only minor. All
cylinders were tested & checked including rockers and informed if it happened again the rockers would be replaced for free. I thought that was fair enough but this damn ticking pinging under load persisted. I only use 98 octane fuel and octane booster. All the work done on this VY SV8 auto is on the top end and maybe blue printing this machine with forged pistons installed might do the trick. I suppose I'll change the lifters and springs while I'm there too - $5000.00 later. Anyway, the car would have 500+hp so the auto box might need to be converted to manual but this auto has a stage 2 shift kit with HD bands & other work too. Would this auto cope because it also has a highstall too?
Any suggestions?
Yeah i have that same noise.. i too was told not to worry about it but it seems to have gotten a bit louder over the past 6 months
I deff wouldnt be wasting ur money on octane booster, been told that it is bad as for ur cat ect
I use Wynns Octane Booster, because I have to.
The fuel around here and in the smaller towns that surround is absolute shit.
Forced induction and/or higher compression coupled with higher ambient temps really highlights how good your fuel has to be.
As soon as I read 'noise under load', detonation was the first thing that came to mind.
Are you still running the same sparkplugs as before?
Have any of the mechanics suggested going colder on the plug?
What sort of ambient temps do you have in your area and do you notice a difference between when it is hot or cool outside?
hey mate i had the same problem i would get a ticking noise under load in my ecotec.... ended up being a really small crack in the exhaust manifold which expanded when put under pressure and would then create the ticking noise... hopes this helps mate cause it took me about 2 months to figure it out lol
