Just after some thoughts on what people think is a good service interval for the auto. I know Holden recommend 105,000km
Also what are peoles thoughts on a complete fluid flush as opposed to changing just the amount that drains out.
Min's done 148,000km and was last serviced at 105,000. I was thinking about just replacing the filter and pan gasket and the fluid that drains out.
When I got my auto serviced, I was told every 50km or two years.
You seem like someone who likes to do as much as they can on their car, as am I, but personally I'd get it done by a auto trans specialist. Having your auto serviced isnt as simple as dropping the oil and changing the filter, they make adjustments to the bands and linkages as well. Its probably a good idea especially at the kms it has on it
I was told these have nothing to adjust. I do my fluid and strainer every 40,000k. Or if the fluid is a browny colour or has a burnt smell, then do it more often. I've never bothered doing the stuff in the torque converter and my fluid is always a nice pink colour and smells "fresh." Mind you, I don't do any towing, though.
'Ah well, I suppose it had to come to this.'
Servicing an Auto is simple. There is no adjustments at all. Its all electrical. The old Trimatic Auto's needed Band Adjustments but the newer Electronic ones dont.
Drop the Pan. Drain the oil. Pull out the old filter. Push in a new Filter. Clean the Inside of the pan including the magnet thoroughly. Clean the Pan gasket surface on the Trans and the Pan itself. Fit new Pan Gasket to Pan and Bolt back to Trans.
Fill with Approx 3.5lt Trans Oil (Dexron III). Start the Engine. Let it idle for a while. Changed the Gear Selector from Park to Drive, then to Reverse, then to Drive. Check the oil level. Top up as required to the Lower section of the Cold marking on the dipstick.
Go for a drive to let the Trans heat up. Check the Oil level with the engine running and in Park.
It should be in between the Hot and Cold Level.
And thats it.
If there was some other problems like slipping, no changing of gears or strange noises, then yes take it to a trans specialist.
I'd like to give it a go myself. I used to service my trimatic including adjusting the band but it was a much smaller box and had a drain plug so not much chance of making a huge mess. The fluid in it is pretty clean but slightly discoloured, it's a dark red not brown and it doesn't smell burnt. The car doesn't tow or get a hard time so I think I will go and buy a service kit and oil from Supercheap. Has anyone used any additives like Nulon and got any feedback?
How do I go about cleaning the pan, just a soft cloth or do I degrease it, hose it and let it dry in the sun? And does the filter have an O ring where it fits into the transmissionand does this come in the kit and need to be changed? I understand the filter just pushes in, it is not bolted in place like a trimatic?
Also the VY has a bigger sump than the early VT's?
I think there are two possible sizes, the deep pan and the shallow pan. I should know, but I can't even remember what mine is, I just tell them the year model, etc when buying the kit. The filter pulls down and the new one pushes up into place, it does come with an 'o' ring type collar, but I have always just used the old one. I use a clean rag to wipe out all the old fluid from the pan and clean the magnet up really well. I use a bit of degreaser or petrol to clean it up thoroughly, then wash it out really well with water and dry it up with another CLEAN rag. There are torque specs for the bolts, which I can find if you like, but I have just gone over and over mine until they are firm, too tight will squash the gasket. Never used additives, so can't comment on those. Cheers.
EDIT: Transmission sump bolts; 9-14 NM.

Just read: 1999 models on have a deep oil pan, which has a black plastic filter that must be used.
'Ah well, I suppose it had to come to this.'
When I first got my VS auto serviced I got both filters and of cause they used the right one.
Now I know I have a shallow pan.
Credit for deep pan filter.
win win win.

Thanks for that VYMAD. Do you know what colour the filter is for the shallow pan? I noticed Super Cheap have the filter and gasket on sale at the moment for about $15 however it just says Vt-VX which is a bit confusing seeing the sump went from shallow to deep sometime during the VT production!
I'm assuming if these kits have a black filter then they will fit into a VY as well?
if it is for a vt-vx then it will be the deep pan filter and they also suit the vy too. From memory the shallow pan is silver/grey
