No i have not run a alloy one, but when mine split i looked into my options and spoke to several people (performance places and just rad supplyers) and they all said the cheap alloy ones where not that good and one place said they had seen them fail with a small head gasket leak.
I also wanted the heavy duty one thats 26mm over the standard 16mm (or there abouts) and i also was told they are crap and not to expect anymore than 2 or 3 years from them.
Yes the good quality alloy ones are good but you pay to much for them, a good plastic one will set you back less than $250 just for the rad its self and seeing you pay $800plus for a alloy one its just not worth it in my book
And the cheap alloy ones i saw where not a direct replacement, i would have had to modify the mounting of the fans which i did not want to do
I just needed one in a hurry, saturday arvo. Rang Repco, $340, rang Autobarn $199. Went to Repco to buy the coolant and told them I'd be buying the radiator there too if it wasn't $340. The bloke said theirs are made in Brisbane and Autobarn's are made in China. He had a look on his computer and came back saying he'd do it for $225. $115 off. That'll do me, he gave me a three year warranty. Mate, if it lasts 3-5 years I'll be happy. Considering the factory one was a plastic tank job and it was seven years old.
How long will an alloy tank one last? Would want to be a bloody long time when I can get a good plastic tank one for a couple of hundred bucks!

when mine split in the ss it was only 350 for a new plastic one with 3-5 years warrenty form the workshop
