Check alternator!! Warning!!!

It's not as dramatic as the thread title, but to my suprise today the 'Check Alternator' msg came up of my dash.

I left the car at work all day, checking to see if it still would start during my breaks. I drove it home and am taking it to the auto electrician in the morning.

Any ideas what it might be/how much it might cost?

likely it will have a code like alt f terminal
would require the reprogramming of the ecm and MAYBE if not done before bcm
OR
drive belt put back on
OR
altenator is failing to charge (duh)

my bets are on the first one
