Hi Guys,
I’ve recently bought a 5.7L V8 out of a (VY SS) from my old man.
The engine has only done approx 20,000km, but anyway he sold it to me coz he has cracked the block....
I was wondering if it would be possible to buy a new block and transfer all the crap from the old block. If so where is a good place to buy a new block? I’m pretty sure the engine is a Ls1 5.7L (4 Bolt??).
If I could what else would I need?... new gaskets, rings etc?
Thanks,
Luke
holden or amcap
Is there anywhere else that sell them cheaper?

Holden don't sell them anymore
It might be wise to have the motor disassembled first (if you have not already) to check what other damage may have occurred to other components, if any, so you know what you are up for on a rebuild. (I assume the cracked block was due to engine overheating).
I would check with some engine builders on where you might locate a new block at a fair price, (assuming they are still available new).
why not just scrap that motor and buy a LS2
want to see more then a typical commodore fitted with an exhuast, then check my thread out... link broken cuase i dont own a tuff car, i just made it up...
The other components are fine thank god
and i'm on apprenticeship wages so buying a ls2 is not an option
im asuming ls2 crank doesnt fit the ls1?
Wheres the crack in block might be possible to weld it up

Nah I don't think its gonna be possible to fix it by welding it... does anyone know of any blocks new or used for sale? Or where and what company's do reproduction blocks coz my mate that work in holden spare parts says holden no longer produce them.
Thanks guys
I've had a look on ebay but all I can really find are cast iron blocks and I need a alloy block I'm pretty sure
you could buy a block from the usa... heard they're reasonably cheap but i havent even looked so its only what ive been told
Yeah that's what i was thinking but I don't know of any company's
eagel auto parts is the only website i could find but they only do short motors not just the blocks
Anyone know of any others?
a bloke at work is thinking of getting one ill ask him when i get the chance
Thanks mate
Try suburban imports Suburban Imports or the engine centre ENGINE CENTRE - HOME PAGE or JT american imports JT American Imports.
They can always import a second hand rebuildable engine for you. They are cheap as chips in the states because there are so many of them over there. The biggest cost is the freight.
why not get a short block and slowly build it up?
