Hey guys,
I have a Series II S VY and was just wondering on what your opinions and recomendations on engine oil to use.
I'm coming up to my 100000kms service and the previous owner of my car ran Royal Purple 20W50 but i personally think I can probably find some better stuff to put through. I hear Mobil 1 is good?
Opinions? Recommendations?
Mate do some research on the internet, royal purple is pretty much the best engine oil you can get (so I have read) it's better than Mobil 1!
As with anything, you get what you pay for, have you seen the prices of royal purple.

I run magnatec 10w-40 in my missus vy wagon, and that runs great. No weird noises and never had any issues.
Same here, Magnatec 10w-40... Great oil at a great price! Seems to quieten down the ecotec a bit too![]()
well in my book im fairly sure it says 15w-30 and recently i did my 195000 service and put some Castrol GTX 15w-30 in and it seems to be better on fuel now since changing from what i had before (i think it was Nulon 10w-40)
Yeah I have been reading up theres no real comparion sheets between oils in the Ecotech engine that I can find anyway.
The cheapest I can get royal purple for is 90 for about 5L which isnt too bad. Just seeing if anyone had a sure-fire oil perfect for the ecotech
Cheers mate.
i use royal purple.. engine loves it!
Personally, Castrol Magnatec 10-w-40. Seems to be a good oil and is popular/common for Ecotecs.
'Ah well, I suppose it had to come to this.'
i use royal purple 10w40 in my vy series 2 v6, had no problems no noises what so ever. one of the best oils on the market

We use castrol magnatec 15w40 for the ecotecs and 10w30 for the alloytecs at work.
$90 for 5L of oil is ridiculous. Ive run castrol oil in mine since new changing every 5000 and at 165,000kms its still quiet as a mouse and goes hard.
Silver Certified.
I use Castrol gold 5-30W no problems at all...... the car gets driven HARRD XD
Use whatever you can afford. It doesn't really matter. As long as the changes are done at least at the intervals recommended, and the type of oil the manual states you shouldn't have a problem.
Any of the well known brands in 10w40, 15w40, 10w50 or even 15w50 will be fine. For a car with lowish kms such as yours, stick with 10w40 or 15w40. For the record, I'm just about to tick over 170,000kms and I use penrite hpr10 10w50. The sad thing with VY's is that they need almost 6L and almost all the recommended oils dont have the 1L top up bottle available..![]()
I agree with nick, since my first car ive pretty much always used penrite, currently using hpr 10w50 in my vy. I bought a 20L drum for around 135 not so long ago as it worked out cheaper than 4 5L bottles but just the other day at I saw a 6L bottle for $39 so would be suitable for a vy with larger sump.
Iv Just Put HPR 15w-60 Penrite, Recommend for cars that require 10-40, 15-40, 20-50, the VY is SOOOOO much quieter and my fuel eco has increased from 10-40 i use to use.
Mind you has ticked over the 200k mark. Done about 1500kms so far, love it.
In all my ecotec's (had 3) i've run either Castrol GTX2 - its a fine oil and good if you are on a tight budget. Or penrite HPR 10 or HPR 15 depending on how many k's the engine has done.

I would go with a 10w/40 or 15w/40 in your engine. Choose a semi-synthetic and choose a good name brand like shell, penrite, mobil, castrol etc and change every 5000kms or 7500kms or maximum 6 months and you can't go wrong.
Thanks heaps guys for all the responses actually came in very handy! Ive got my service this week so ill be sure to go with a 15W40 and going to try to stick to the same brand. Very good knowledge you guys!
Cheers
I've been using Shell Helix 10w50 semi synthetic in all my engines since 1990... My VY now has 275K and never uses more the half a litre between changes - every 15K as per the manual. My wife has a N15 Pulsar SSS (2.0l) with 315K and we have never used a spanner under the bonnet (except to replace the batteryand it has run this oil since new.
$90 for 5L of oil is pointless on a V6 that is not thrashed. This would include full synthetic blends like Mobil 1. If you have modified the engine and were giving it some heavy right foot work the sure but for most of use any reputable brand should be fine. Castrol, Penrite, Valvoline etc all make highly rated oils.
As said before, as long as you use a good brand, change it and the filter regularily - you won't go far wrong. Using the same brand continuously also probably has some benefits.
