My 2003 V6 Chevrolet Lumina Coupe (Monaro CV6 in Aus) doesn't appear to have a cabin filter which seems like a major omission for a car that is sold in a desert country! I've checked the handbook and workshop manual and there is no mention of it anywhere. As a result, the interior resembles a cross between Bondi beach and the inside of a Hoover bag.
Does anyone know of a modification that would allow me to fit a cabin filter to the car?
Thanks

I should have used the search earlier: Upgrade Cabin Air Filter
The chap in the link used a FRAM CF8921 (similar to the FRAM CF8921A) which is used on the 1999-2003 Mercury Monterey and 2004-2007 Ford Freestar. A search on the Fram website shows up these alternatives:
ATP C15
BALDWIN PA4152
BOSCH P3652
CHAMP CAF1706 / CAF1743
DENSO 4532017
FORD XF2H-19N619 AC / XF2Z-19N619 AB
GK CF1010
GENERAL MOTORS 89031229
LUBER-FINER CAF1743
MANN MC1002
MOTORCRAFT FP22A
PRONTO PC5389
WARNER CAF1743
WIX 24807
The filter dimensions are:
11.44" x 5.19" x 0.97" which equates to 29cm x 13cm x 2.5cm
I'm going to see if I can get one on the way home from work tonight to see if it's as easy to fit as it looks.
Thanks for the link, I might see if I can get hold of one here in Australia. Would be better than dust and stuff coming straight in.
'Ah well, I suppose it had to come to this.'
The conversation in the parts shop was pretty typical of this part of the world:
Me: "I'd like this cabin filter please"
Them: "all of these?"
Me: "no, that's list of different part numbers for the same filter"
Them: "Well which one is it?"
Me: "The numbers are from the Fram website as cross-reference - use the part number that matches the brand you sell"
Them: "So what car is it for?"
Me: "The filter is the one that is fitted to a 2004-2007 Ford Freestar - but it's not to fit to that car"
Them: "VIN number?"
Me: "It's not for a Freestar so I don't have a VIN"
Them: "So what car is it for?"
Me: "You won't have it listed because it doesn't have a cabin filter"
Them: "What car?"
Me: "2003 Chevrolet Lumina Coupe"
Them: "They don't have a cabin filter"
Me: "I know, that's why I gave you the part numbers. I'm fitting it to the Chevrolet to stop the dust getting in"
Them: "So why do you want the Ford one?"
Me: "To fit to my Chevrolet as a modification"
Them: "But they don't have a cabin filter"
Me: "I KNOW - THAT'S THE WHOLE POINT!"
Anyway, I should have one by tomorrow evening if I managed to get my message through
Thankyou mr Moss, for the entertainment and the modification tip.
I have googled up the part number and the best I can manage is :
US$12 part
US$18 postage
Hoping someone can do better than that locally.
cheers
"You want fast, reliable and cheap ? You'll find a Commodore out there that can provide any two out of those three!"
I picked up the filter (Motorcraft FP22A) on my way home from work but didn't have time to fit it, so I'll take a crack at it at some time over the weekend if it's not too warm (friday and saturday are our weekend). I'll take pictures.
I also have to fit my aftermarket HID kit to the dip beam headlights, PAC adaptor for the steering wheel stereo controls and my recently fitted Kenwood stereo and a few other bits and pieces.
If anyone is interested I can provide these filters for $20 plus postage. 1 time offer as I can order up to 5 when I order mine and it gets me a better rate on postage. I am holding off ordering to try and find something locally. VYMAD, be sure to let us know if you find anything.

Cabin filter now added.
We get a bit of dust and sand around here - funny that, what with it being a desert and all!
The trim in front of the screen is held on by scrivets (marked by the green lines). There's a screen finisher and then the plastic grille, both of which have to be released (7 scrivets in total). Remove the scrivets and it can be lifted to reveal the area where the cabin filter should be!
The dust clearly shows the problem. There's a little wire mesh grille that can keep out leaves and small animals, but nothing smaller than that.
Pop out the mesh and use it as a guide for trimming the cabin filter (this one is the model for a Ford Freestar, whatever one of those it!).
Place the filter in place, refit the plastic covers and scrivets then enjoy a dust free interior.
Lovely stuff - about 30 minutes work all in. In hindsight, for easier access I may remove the wipers and take the grille right off next time.
The really frustrating thing is that if Holden had fitted a proper filter to the car in the first place it would have probably added about $2 to the cost of building it. Still, there are no deserts or dust in Aus, are there?![]()
[QUOTE= Still, there are no deserts or dust in Aus, are there?[/QUOTE]
Are you kidding me? Over half or more of our interior is desert! Luckily, though over 85% of Aussies live within 50 klms of the coast. Where I live, there is basically zero dust compared to the look of your pictures there! No wonder you wanted a filter.
Thanks for the pics and write up, definately worth looking into.
