THIS IS WHAT HAPPEN:
GOT HOME AFTER A 8 HR DRIVE EVERYTHINGS GOOD, I GOT BACK IN IT 2HRS LATER TOOK IT FOR A DRIVE THAN.......
1. HIGH BEAM INDICATOR COMES ON UNDER LOAD THAN JUST STOP COMING ON
2. LIGHTS IN THE CLUSTER/STERO WENT OUT THAN CAME BACK ON COUPLE TIMES
3. ABS LIGHT CAME ON AND THEN WENT OFF AFTER 5 SECS
4.TURN THE CORNER, THE CAR STALLED, STARTED BACK STRAIGHT AWAY.
CAR GOES GREAT WITHOUT A PROBLEM UNTIL I TURN THE HEADLIGHTS ON.
SO I FIGURE ITS GOT SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE ALTERNATOR, SO I HAVE ORDER A NEW ALTERNATOR REGULATOR THE THING IS ONE PLACE TELLS ME ITS AN EXTERNAL REGULATOR THEN ANOTHER TELLS ME ITS AN INBUILT REGULATOR?????
SO IS IT EXTERNAL OR INBUILT REGULATOR????
THE CAR STARTS FINE NO SLOW CRANKING, SO I FIGURE THE ALTERNATOR IS OK
HOLDEN SAID A NEW REGULATOR IS $300 AND ANOTHER SHOP QOUTED ME $100
SO WHAT DO I DO????? I HAVE IT BOOKED INTO A AUTO ELECTRICIAN TOMORROW TO TEST THE REGULATOR BUT I DONT WANT THEM TO TRY RIP ME OFF CAUSE IM A GIRL????
THE CAR IS A 2003 VY SS SERIES 1 5.7LT AUTO
I HAVE JUST BROUGHT IT AND WENT LIKE A DREAM ON THE WAY HOME SO I HOPE ITS NOT MUCH WRONG WITH IT.[/SIZE]
there is no warrenty, i paid cash through a private sale
i'd say its something to do with the alternator... and just so you know holden will use genuine parts whereas some random workshop wouldnt so thats why the price is different
hope all goes well and you find someone who wont try rip you off cause your female
Boys get ripped off too, but I do think some of the shonky mechanics out there do see females coming.
Best way to avoid this is use an approved repairer (RAA here in SA) who has been in business for a number of years. Generally these guys trade on reputation so are less likely to con you etc.
I am going to assume here you are only young and therefore have a lifetime ahead of needing a mechanic. Try to find one in your local area on recommendation who you can trust. This way you can take your car there with confidence knowing they are not going to add on repairs not needed etc.
Avoid car dealerships where possible, they charge through the nose for genuine parts and too much for labour.
Good luck and keep us posted.
I would wait until the autoelectrician has had a look at it. It could be any number of things from a faulty alternator to a loose battery terminal (which can cause trouble when there are a lot of electrical loads). I wouldn't normally start ordering/buying parts until I had a diagnosis.
As for external regulators - I suppose it depends upon the definition used by the person talking to you but generally they went out in the 1970s (so of course they could still be current in Australia!).
Check the terminals on the back of the alternator. It's common for them to be loose.
Also check the battery connection, especially the earth connection to the body.
yeah a loose terminal or earth wire is a strong possibility. Could still be the battery or alternator ... I am not a sparky !! but sounds like it dies when there's a lot of load on the battery ie head lights on.
Auto electrician should be able to test the battery and alternator in about 2 minutes. Check the terminals yourself first, just grab them one at a time and try to twist it. If it moves or comes off its loose > tighten up the clamp bolt.
Do you have any friends who could look at the alternator for you? It could be the wiring running off the back of it which is a known fault, or something simple like a loose connection and it only requires the engine cover to be lifted off to check. It seems a shame to have to pay someone for something as simple as that and it it's just a loose connection, cleaning and tightening it would only be matter of minutes.
Even if the regulator is at fault, a complete alternator from the wreckers might not set you back too much and it's an easy job to remove and replace the old one. Shop around amongst your friends - someone must have some mechanical smarts.
Incidentally, the regulator would be classified as internal, as it is built into the rear of the alternator, rather than being a separate component mounted remotely. Some might call it external because it is actually accessible from the outside of the alternator and is reasonably simple to dismantle.
Mine went a little haywire once turned out to be the wiring loom had rubbed through near the fire wall, quick clean up some soldering by a good sparky recover and protect, never missed a beat since.
whoops left out that was on my VT wagon that my bro now owns
So i had it checked and the alternator is charging just fine, im going to have alook at the wire on the back of it on the weekend.
Where can i find the earth in the enginge bay i had a quick look?
Do you think this could of been a once of thing that happen?
Im going to take it for a drive tonight n see if it happens again
Something must be playing up with the wiring if it only happens when turning corners.
This really sounds like a Earth issue, My Old Pintara did all this and drove me mad, In the End the Body earth needed a good clean and new washers fitted.
sounds like battery terminals to me....
Power is measured in DECIBEL
HELLO
I suspect the dash has been out for some reason and now you have an earth issue.
It happen again last night except it didnt stall just the lights in stero went out came back on than the abs light came on so I turn car off turn it back on n was fine didnt happen again, it only happens every now n than.i had the alternator check its fine, battery connections are tight , im going to book it into holden today, it has something to do with the lights, I dont think the dash has been out the guy I brought off kept it very clean n always serviced from a dealer n when this all happens the high beam light comes on than goes out as well
I don't see how the alternator would cause such a thing. I'm with deals - sounds like an earthing/faulty connection somewhere to me. An hour or two at your friendly auto elec should have it sorted.
Reaper
yeah thats what im thinking to. would holden be able to pick up a fualt in the wiring or the earthing with there diagnostic machine when checking the car.the car system check comes up ok when i start the car
lol very true. i know what holden can be like, i will be telling them to check the wiring and earthing first and to ring me when they find the problem n tell me the cost of repair before fixing it, and i wont be paying for new parts they put on that does not fix the problem.who knows it might be something small i can fix myself and save me alot of money
i agree with you to a certain extend.... there a different between repairing what could be wrong to repairing something that has nothing to do with the problem. there a point where you need to say enough is enough i dont want to be going back to holden every 2nd day to tell them the problem is still happening and they havent fixed it. i dont have a big budget so im not going to let them charge me what ever they want im going to be checking the reciept and asking questions if something dont look right. there are alot of mechanics out that will rip you off if they see you coming !!!!
Personally I would go to a good auto electrician over a holden Dealer. Ive found holden are more focused on selling things out of their spare parts inventory than diagnosing faults
