Hi all. New to this forum and l'm already on the bot! l have a 2004 VY series2 calais V6. 2 years ago the engine stalled whilst l was driving. ait started again but failed again soon afterwards. l took it to a mechanic who replaced the crank angle sensor and no problems but only for a week when same problem again so off to dealers who replaced direct fire ignition module. Fine for 18 months --same problem and dealer found no fault. Car starts and fine again. 6 months later(feb this year) same again so dealer replaces both crank angle sensor and cam angle sensor. Then 3 days ago same again except would stall then l could restart then stall etc etc. Local auto elec found no errors on his diagnostic machine. By now l'm getting pretty pissed off that noone including 2 different holden dealers can find any problem so just guess likely causes which obviously doesnt solve the problem but rather continues to cost $$$$$$$$'s. It has been suggested the main computer module may be faulty but not by the dealers. Can anyone shed some light other than tell me to flog the car and buy a Falcon?? l'm just plain frustrated and these holden dealers dont seem to care to much.
Hey mate.
You have to remember the problem you are having seems to be quite intermittent, This can be a real pain in the arse esp for mechanics when they cannot find the fault, Esp when it only seems to happen once every few months. Its not so much there fault, as they would need to have the car until it faulted again, that could take a day or 10 months.
I would have said the CAS but thats already been replaced. Once it has stalled have you had to remove the key and start it back up ? Or just turn it again and it has started fine ? Just trying to rule out the communication between the key and the contact ring.
Have You tried just giving it a full service, Plugs, Leas etc ?
Have you got a mate that could maybe borrow some ignition coils just for fun ?
Process of elimination esp with stupid issues like this.
does the engine stall or only when your starting to brake??? im assuming its an auto cause its a calais but i had a problem like this on my manual S pac
cleaned the throttlebody and the plenum and havent had a problem since
Thanks for you reply. l've actually contacted general motors today by email and surprise even on a public holiday they rang me within 2 hours which l thought very impressive. Hopefully their enthusiasm to help will eventually give me an answer. l also spoke to an old mate mechanic who said as a long shot it could be the fuel pump which is located in the tank!!
ITS a battery
Fuel Pump Makes sense LOL I always forgot about it lol
I had a similar thing happen to my VZ . I was parked on a very steep angled driveway at a friends place with the motor running. After I pulled away the engine stalled .
I restarted it and it cranked for about 15 seconds , then started and has not had any further trouble going on for about 6 months now . However I have not been parked on any steep hills with the engine running in that time .
However I will fit a new battery soon just incase it's faulty . It seems to charge and start fine though.
Welcome to the forum eliston.
I had a similar problem with my VY. The engine stopped a couple of times unexpectedly. The crank angle sensor was replaced and it was fine for a couple of weeks until it played up again. That’s when we started checking the wiring connections and found the wiring loom that connects to the DFI module was dodgy.
To fix it undo the small bolt holding the harness in place and remove the harness from the DFI module. The DFI module is the thing the coils are screwed to. Get a small pick and (carefully) close up the terminals slightly. Make sure the contacts are clean before you gently refit them.
I’ve since found it is very common for these terminals to loosen and cause intermittent problems.
