Default redback exhaust...and lame excuse by mechanic

hi ,i had a redback single cat exhaust with a rear resi fitted on my vy v6 auto (dual fuel), its an off the shelf model and before i had it fitted the exhaust guy said that it wont drone as he is gonna put the rear resi with twin outs , but after getting it fitted it bloody drones alot when i went back to him about the droning , he gave some kind of a crap excuse that the muffler got fiberglass packed in some kind of plastic bags and to get to full output the plastic bags have to pop and the fiberglass will expand and than i will see a lot of difference in the droning thing and he says its gonna take around 700kms to do that , since getting my exhaust system fitted , i had driven rnd 580kms , including driving 400ks in a single day , but i havent had any change in droning ,

Is there a way to fix it , as at 60 and 80kmph it drives me crazy ,,

hey mate, i may be wrong, but when it comes to exhausts you generally get what you pay for.

Supposedly exhaust systems do take some time to 'break in' but 700 km's does sound a bit much.

Unfortunately because you have a v6 it is going to drone no matter what, so there isnt much you can do except change systems to maybe.

How much did you pay for it?

does it have a muffler before the rear resi?

keep in mind your auto trans makes your exhaust drone abit compared to a manual trans'd commodore

Majority of them will unless you get a high quality exhaust system.

Also, the combination of other things affects it. (headers, cat, trans, engine condition)

The "break in" time sounds about right, although it's usually 2-3 weeks of normal driving for it to wear in.

I've even noticed it with my custom system the sound has "seasoned" a bit after a few months.

Red backs drone mate, the exhaust guy should've been upfront about it... but having said that I had a VR with a redback on it, droned like helll. stuck a resi on it and it was much nicer and bearable, that was the big fat resi though not the little hot dog one

to get rid of the drone mate, take the redback catback, throw it in the bin and get yourself a good exhaust system with headers and hi flow cat/s. Easiest solution and it will make your car sound better than with just the cat back.

I agree, most autos will, most manuals you can go to the next gear and it will stop. The L67's have a pretty unique note. With a good exhaust they sound very nice imo, very different to a NA V6.

My V6 single system doesn't drone at all... I have to lock it into second gear at 60k's to hear the exhaust note and even then it's not droney at all

Mine drones the tiniest but only when you're in a tunnel or something. Pace maker extractors + Custom 2 1/2 with hotdog + rear resinator.

Without extractors on my ute it droned so bad. Extractors make a big difference.

I've got HM extractors, 2x VY1 HSV cats and a RAGE single 2.5" catback. I get a teeny bit of drone when cruising along at about 1600rpm in 3rd (auto) and a decent note at WOT. If I had my time again I would buy a Lukey catback instead.

Yea I've had my cat back in now for a good 5000k's and it sounds a lot different to when it first went in. Mines a Lukey 2.5" and I'm more than happy with it, I'd recommend going down that path if you could be bothered :/ would just be a muffler swap so I'd imagine it wouldn't cost too great a deal. I don't have a rear resi and it doesn't drone one bit but yours being an auto I'd probably opt for one to be honest.

Oh and with the plastic bags in the muffler, that's the first I've heard of that :|

That's an interesting story with the bags in the exhaust. - maybe the problem is the mechanic made his own "custom" packing out of woolworths shopping bags and he's hoping they pop soon?
Every one of my exhausts has actually gotten louder after about 700km so I doubt that your droning is going to go away, the best idea I can think of is getting an actual muffler for the rear section of the exhaust, and that should quieten it down.
Alternatively if you got a 2.25" exhaust made up your droning issues would be solved - have you still got your stock exhaust? Just take the big box muffler off the back and have a smaller style resonator installed on that.

I found red back mufflers sound raspy and drone a fair bit. Just personal experience with a few different people's car's.

get a full 2.5" system with the biggest reverse flow mufflers you can fit. Won't drone

don't bother with resonators, you need proper mufflers.

It's not exactly rocket science, the stock system is 2.25" thin stainless anyway which is a bees dick smaller then 2.5" and it doesn't drone at all.

The twin outlet rear resionators drone a lot more than the singles too.

I do a Manta catback with muffler and rear resonator for $260 shipped to your door. Never had a drama with anybody saying they drone.
