Hey everyone,
looking to buy a new car. found a clean looking VY for cheap.
Couple of things car needs for rwc, trying to decide if its worth it.
Apparently car has been looked at by a mechanic and needs the bottom casting rod bushes fixed/replaced. Wondering what would damage these in the first place?
Also needs a new rear seatbelt (not too bad right?).
The tyres need replacing, but ill just put different rims on it all together.
Main one is the bushes.. couldnt find much info on costs etc...
Any ideas?
can i ask how much the asking price is..
Bushes are in the $100 - $200 bracket..
You can buy Casting Rod kits from places like Super Cheap for $100 - $200 from memory..
From my knowledge bushes are just lubricated rubber parts in the suspension that act as hinges. These have a hard life in the suspension, and obviously will wear out eventually.
I had my Z bar bushes replaced, they cost $39 + labour, labour would be the biggest cost you are looking at in this case.
Seatbelt is easy to do, just make sure you disconnect the battery so the seatbelt pre-tensioner doesn't trigger an error in the computer.
And rims/tyres, make sure they look nice :3 haha
If you want proper cost approximations, just ring or pop into your local mechanic
Wouldn't quote me 100%, but thought I would share what I know anyway..![]()
bushes just wear out after awhile. its just one of them things you cant help.
seatbelt is easy to replace.
tires, ask the guy your buying it of to knock the price down cuase of the tires, unless he can buy new ones...
want to see more then a typical commodore fitted with an exhuast, then check my thread out... link broken cuase i dont own a tuff car, i just made it up...
with the bushes, they are fluid filled and when they get old, they crack and the fluid leaks out which causes things like brake shudder, excess tyre wear etc
Regarding the replacement seat belt, there is no pre-tensioner to concern yourself with on rear seat belts - they are only fitted to the front seat belts. Just make sure the belt is in good condition and matches the model you are fitting it to. You should be able to purchase a rear belt second hand with safety as they are less likely to have been stressed in an impact and get less wear in normal use than front belts.
The bushes are reasonably simple to replace and the fact that they are in need of replacement doesn't necessarily mean the car is a bad buy. Those parts lead a hard life and are an acknowledged common replacement for VT-VZ Commodores.
Castor rod bushed is the correct name. Holden ones are fluid medium filled to cushion them. They along with engine mounts which are the same medium filled design are reknowned for failure.
I always replace with Nolathane, Whiteline, Superpro urethane bushes. These will last around 10years whereas the stock type will last only 2-3 imo.

Reason they fail is do to front wheel getting a knock on something or just from general wear n tear. FYI they should cost around $250-$300 supplied and fitted. Any more and you are been ripped off.
