My VY wagon auto tranny died yesterday. In the middle of a busy highway onramp. Just a thump and I lost all my gears and it made a loud whirring sound which was in tandem with the rise and drop of revs.
Im so bloody shocked. Serviced every 30,000kms and it hadn't lost any oil and it was still pinky red. No warning at all, never slipped, always shifted into D and R perfectly cold or hot. I dont do donuts and stuff like that as its my work car.
Apparently it was stripped internally, I have to find out more info. I have aftermarket warranty and they wouldn't cover it because of "wear and tear". Its the biggest piece of shit ever written on paper.
Im going to take it to a solicitor because I cant begin to imagine how many other people have been shafted by aftermarket warranties. Stay away from National Warranty Company affiliated with 24/7 road service.
A lot of those after market warranties refer to either covering "internally lubricated components" or excluding them. What does your "warranty" cover in that regard?
It covers internally lubricated components up to the value of $1700. I assume that it covers it then. Naturally wear and tear will occur on anything that is being used. Its just ridiculous.
I'd definitely be fighting that one. If the gears etc within an auto don't constitute "internally lubricated components", then I don't know what does. And for $1700, you should be able to pick up a reconditioned trans.
Wear and tear is a convenient cop-out for con artists. Total failure of a transmission which has been properly maintained isn't "wear and tear" unless it's done a lot of kilometres. How many on your car?
hmmm sounds dodgy hope you get it fixed mate has probably stipped a spline or the like
Well it such a wide span of variable that they would use any excuse possible to get out of it. It has 188,000kms on it, and been regularly serviced. I told them that exactly what you said but they said to me that it is still wear and tear. Its like talking to a bunch of donkeys.
I did find out that it stripped a spline. Excuse my bad knowledge on cars but is that an "internally lubricated component"?
When i bought my VT there was an extended warranty booklet from the last owner in the glovebox.
Was going through it and decided it was worth more in the bin than spending my time transferring it over. The amount of stuff they didnt cover was ridiculous.

sure is internally lubricated
sorry to hear dude - those warranties aren't worth the paper their written on unfortunately....
nathans VY Calais - 'Calais 2.0' | VT Equipe | VS Calais **SOLD!**
Thanks everyone with your quick responses. Its just a big stress as its my work car which I rely on and by the time their "dispute resolution" department get back to you could take forever. I will speak to my solicitor tomorrow.
3rd Party Extended Warranties are usually not worth the paper they are written on.
Most of these companies do EVERYTHING in their power to weasel out of paying.
Though in your case it sounds ike you are in the right and I'm sure an email fro your solicitor to them will persuade them.
Good luck with it mate!
Agree that the whole "extended warranty" thing is normally a scam. Just out of interest, how much extra was the warranty and what were the conditions attached (required service intervals etc). I would think a busted spline would be a fair claim regardless of how it happened. You in the Western Suburbs of Syd? I can recommend Marko's in Penrith. As mentioned $1700 should be close.
Just be thankful its not a Land Rover Disco 4, Mate of mine has just has a reco box for a 3 YO (150K) done - (ZF 6 speed same as the Territory) and it was $8K fitted! The kicker was they pulled the box and found the transfer case had water ingress and the input spline was welded on the output from the auto. Throw in another 4.5K for a total repair cost of $12.5K YIKES! He has just taken the family out to Poppels Corner (where SA meets NT meets WA). Hope it hangs together!
