I recently purchased a 2003 VY 25th Anniversary Commodore. It has about 73, 000 klms on it. About 2 weeks after I bought it, it started to make a squeaking type of sound. It doesnt happen when braking, only while driving and the noise seems to get faster as the wheels rotate faster . I cant seem to find which side its coming from either as it happens at random times. Its not the fan belt. Its quite frustrating. Ive taken it to my mechanic and he took it for a drive and of course it didnt squeak. Does anyone have any ideas or have had something similar happen to them ? Before I take it somewhere and they tell me a load of bull and sell me something I dont need because Im a woman and dont know any better...Id really appreciate some advice![]()
A squeak could be anything...
Seeing as you said it's more noticable as the wheels rotate faster, you'd best be off taking it to a wheel specialist place like Beurepairs or brakes plus, somewhere like that.
Unless it's affecting the cars mechanics, I can't imagine it being anything serious. More so seeing that it comes n goes.
Don't worry about it costing you too much.

sounds like the handbrake not disengaging properly, was a common problem in the vy's. my vy does it also.
in the vz,they fixed it by fiting an extra spring or something which helped push the handbrake off the back wheels better...
As above, the handbrake can make like a chuffing/scraping/grinding sound. Usually sounds a bit like a steam train. It comes from the back wheels. Generally you will only hear it with the window down when driving past a building/fence that will reflect the sound back. It's just an annoyance, doesn't effect anything negatively. There's a 'anti-scrape' kit to fix it.
How do you know it's not the fan belt? Have you changed it? Reason i ask is that mine started making a squeek-squeek-squeek noise but only under light throttle and light load. The frequency of the squeeks didn't speed up much with engine rpm either.
At idle, coasting, braking, wide open throttle and revving it in neutral it didn't make any noise. It started doing it only on really cold mornings, then progressed to the point that it would do it in any weather conditions.
have the same problem mine comes from the brake everytime i say hit a bump it squeaks its rlly annoying
mine is doing the same i replaced the brakes pads still doing it
Thanks all above for your replies. I am booked in Thursday and a tyre/wheel place is going to look over the car for me to see if they can sort it before I get some rims put on. I will look into the above mentioned issues and see if they could be the cause. Much appreciatedWill update soon. Cheers.
I backed out my driveway this morning...its not a steep driveway. I heard the same squeak...with a bit of grinding this time. I know theres some time before brake pads need replacing, but when I get car looked at tomorrow I will let them know.
I will make sure they check the handbrake as well.
Check the front right caliper area and compare it to the front left. Mine had a clip missing once that caused this.
