VY V6 Gear box groan?

My flatmate has reported to me that in the mornings when he goes to put his car into 1st gear its groans a bit and is slightly harder to engage then when at running temp.
any ideas what this is about before I start poking around?

First thing i would do is try changing the gearbox oil.
