I've got a 2003 VY SS and am having some problems with the rear end / diff area for a few months now.
Started noticing a single knock at rear when it would do the following things:
1) Travel at very low speeds - 0-20km/h
2) Low speed again - when having the steering wheel turned even a little bit
3) When accelerator is pressed
4) Also it used to have a vibration/shaking feeling from the rear when i would turn and accelerate after at traffic lights with an occasional knock.
Took it over to a diff place last week, and they changed the 'LSD Carrier' and replaced oil and stung me $700, which seemed to solve problem number 1, 2 & 4.
However problem 3 has not gone away. I couldnt notice anything when i test drove it so i didnt bring it to their attention, and also because this diff joint has been there for over 15 years so i thought they knew in full confidence how to fix it.
I want to know what i should do in this situation. Do you think its still relating to the Diff this knocking noise? because I have heard that a knock when accelerator is pressed can also be a number of other things like bushes, and universals etc but i dont want to let this diff place off the hook if it is relating to what they didnt fix considering i paid $700 for it.

Just rang up the differential place and they said there is a 1000 km run in and if it does it after that bring it back but he believes it should go away - very strange issue i have never heard of this type of situation resolving itself... oh well only time will tell. Should do 1000km within a month.
Let us know how you go. I have a similar problems to your 1 and 3
my dads ss has a simular problem his c.v joints have exsesive movement causing the problem
Have noticed however if i press accelerator very lightly initially, the knock is not there.
Either way, if it still does it after 1000 k's have passed i'm taking it right back to the guy who fixed it!
I can't see how 1000km will help. If it's knocking when you gas on there's play somewhere. Put it in neutral with handbrake on, hop under and try turning the driveshaft. See if you can see where the play is.
My HSV knocks at low speeds as it changes gears.
You can hardly feel the changes but each time there is that knock.
Asked my diff bloke about it just after I bought the car and he said it was excessive backlash through the whole drive train and on many V8s he had experienced the same thing.
He said it doesn't apear to be a major problem and many cars go for years with no breakages.

I hear what your saying but at the end of the day i paid money for something in the effort that all knocking noises at the rear of the car would be silenced, now if it was a $50 thing i paid for i would have let it go but not for $700..
Thats just what i think anyway, i could just be obsessing about it.
Come to think of it mine knocks a little at low speed too. I'm going to change the oil soon. Don't think it's ever been done.
My vs diff was terrible, loud knocking and whining. Changed the fluid for some thick penrite stuff and it was like it was 10 years ago, only whinned a little and no knocks.
Do you know what they oil put in it? Cheap LSD oil or decent stuff? Hopefully not open diff oil!
