Hey guys,
Car: VY exec, auto, V6
Last night I found that my break lights werent working again, and to top it all off it now doesnt want to start. I am about to go out and check the fuses as it was too dark last night (and i was too drunk lol) but this non starting thing is going to be a major issue.
The starter and battery is fine as it is cranking over. I am also going to test the coil pack and check out the fuel pump.
is there something that i might have missed or havent thought about?
your help would be greatly appreciated.

Your brake lights weren't working again? Does this mean they've failed before?
By any chance are you on LPG?
If it stalled quickly on start up, its just due to when it switched from fuel to gas, the revs were probs too low and stalled, once this happens, its quite hard to start up straight after. Just gotta let it sit for a bit.
Also im guessing you can't check this if your cars not going, but I had a problem where both my rear lights and cruise control were not working, It ended up being some wire/clip or something behind the brake pedal that broke, hence severed the connection to all. Sorry its not that detailed but i didnt have a clue what was wrong hence dropped it off at auto electrician.
so the non starting issues have been fixed. just needed some loving but the break lights are blowing the fuse.
possibly a short somewhere?
I did have some genius play around with the wiring without my permission a couple of years back. I think what ever the #### head did has now descided to crap out.
looks like some more loving and wiring is in order... Sigh, I hate wiring![]()

Dont you love it when you find things that the previous owner did to your car....
Ok on closer inspection I found that the wiring for the spolier was completely ####ed. Hence the shorting. So now the spoiler is removed and now for a temp fix Im going to go buy some blank grommets for the holes...

Couldn't you leave the spoiler on and just leave the wiring to it disconnected?
nah cause you can get difected for not having the spoiler break light working

Cant you get defected for not having 3 break lights in general?... i'm sure they'de let ya off if you explain what happened anyway![]()
you need three break lights, but if you have a spoiler on you have to have that one working as it blocks the view of the one in the rear window, hence if its not working and your aware of it you will get defected, and as I am a hopless liar, im not going to take that chance.

Sorry -forgot it was the Aussie Soviet Nanny state and that you end up in the Gulag for the tiniest transgression. Thank God that the UK (and UAE) are more reasonable.
Yeap still all wired up. now i need to either fix the spoiler or get a new boot

Not all utes have 3 brake lights, Is that an exception?
Not staking my life on it, but:
http://www.ntc.gov.au/filemedia/Reforms/AVSRConsolidated22August2007.pdf
Division 9, Brake Lights, Page 62.
If built after 1959 and having more than 4 wheels, you need two brake lights.
You can have one or more additional brake lights.
Pre 1934, no brake light needed (eg: between 1934-1959, only one light needed).
Does not specify a compulsory third light, however I think that all newer vehicles have them. Generally, it is accepted that any "safety" feature of a vehicle at the time of manufacture can be improved, not removed.
You always have the option of arguing with police over it - keep a copy of the ADR with you, doubt you'll win - there is always something else that will fail....
The adr changed in about 1989-1990,all cars must have a third brake light (im pretty sure in the window/at eye level etc) fitted.
That's why the series one vn didn't have a light in the window but the series 2 did...
The above is supposedly the full gamete of changes rolled into one - last modified in 2007 so I would have expected that there would have been a reference to it in there.
It may be a directive rather than a rule so therefore would be found elsewhere.
The other concept is that once something is installed, it has to be there.
yes utes dont have three brake lights. what i mentioned earlier was specifically for my car. my car came out of the factory with three working brake lights, so at all times three working brake lights are needed.
your car needs as many working brake lights it was fitted with when it came out of the factory brand new.

^^^ this is what I believe to be correct too. A rear window or spoiler brake light would be all that is needed.
