As the title says im looking toput a cam in my vy ss, it has 2.5" cat back exhaust with extractors, its auto and thats pretty much it.i will be buying a otr before i get a tune done after the cam is in.
i was reading street machine and they recommend the 220/220 114 camshaft, i have youtube it but im not sure if it sounds lumpy enough for me, i really want that nice lumpy sound in saying that i dont want to have to do alot of work to achieve this.
i also know 232/234 is popular what would i need to do to put this one in what upgrades stall converter??
i also like the 228/230 cams but keeping in mind i have an auto would this be to big of a cam?
can anyone recommend a great cam with a nice lumpy sound, i do want to install it myself and if anyone knows of a better cam please comment???
Big cams are great for lumpy idles but you also need to think about what you are going to do with the car. If you go too big you will find the car is a pig to drive on the street. FWIW I'd recommend something small and get the tuner to drop the idle a hundred revs or so.

You don't even need an aftermarket cam for a lumpy idle - your tuner can make the car shake with a stocker in there.
how does that work i am interested in this and how much roughly would that cost to do
Just take a plug lead off if you want it to shake = FREE lol

Is your exhaust a twin 2.5 or only a single?? im assuming its the twin cause otherwise id probably be fixing that before i put a cam in it

For a 232/234 cam you would want a stall and diff gears. I'm pretty sure most places would recommend 3.9's or so for a cam that size.
i would go to a few shops tell them what your after how much you drive your car and they will give you a good indication of what to get i had a 23x/23x in my old ss and a 22x/22x in my clubsport now and its more powerfull more responsive and still shakes like a mofo,

i actually dont know the exact specs so thats what i put up, my old cam was a 232/234 i think cant remember was a few years ago now and it was a absolute pig to drive, like i said got to a few shops ask some questions just trying to answer the post not flame anyone
Do you want a lumpy sound or a fast car?
A cam spec of 2xx/2xx is worthless with out knowing the LSA, that angle can make a huge difference.
Too much LSA without decent heads is crap
A big cam needs a big stall and reasonably short gears to get anything useful from it.
Always think of the power as a package, a decent balanced package is what you want for a quick car. A monster cam with stock heads/extractors/cats/exhaust/stally/diff gears sucks big time.
I would not change a cam to a 220/220 114, with the nearly $3K by the time you have fitted it up correctly, you may as well go something a lot stronger

I have asked this question many times.
The truth of the matter is, if you are always driving your car on the street and require driveability you are better off sticking with a small duration camshaft.
For an automatic, I would go no more than 220 degress on the intake as anything above this really starts to affect the low end torque curve.
I would choose something on a 112 or 113LSA as this will give you a more peakier powerband and great throttle response.
I have had a monster cam, 229/242 .631 .631 114.5LSA and a 224/232 115LSA and they both drive like absolute crap on the street.
I even have CNC LS3 heads along with 11:5.1 compression and a ported fast intake on my vz clubsport which also has a 2500rpm stall converter and 3:91 gears.
I now have a 219/227 112LSA+4 camshaft and it absolutely goes no tomorrow.
So much torque throughout the whole range with very snappy throttle response, and off the line it beats those two above cams with extreme ease.
This camshaft also made more peak power than my previous 224/232 camshaft by about 10kw and my fuel economy has improved.
