Hi people
Am a first time owner of a australian car being a vy adventra CX8
and have a question most of you will laugh at.
What is the difference between ls1 and ls2?
Also what problems have the alloy v8s now the oil problem is sorted, and what mods were made to stop the oil useage?
Also have the front bar recall and new half shafts fitted in the rear to stop cv like noises and all other minor probs worked out however I have rather an annoying vibration/harshness only at 1100 rpm.Other gen111 motors I have driven dont seem to have this problem.
Any feed back appreciated
Cheers
Mort
The LS1 is the 5.7L and the LS2 is the HSV 6L. Some people say that it is a completly different engines and others say that its just bored out to 6L. Cant help you with your other questions.
how bad is the vibration? cos i never noticed it in our cx8, but i will look out for it next time i'm driving it...maybe it's just 2 ton V8 thing.
AFAIK the oil problem was fixed with revised piston rings. Neither of my 2 GenIII's have had that problem (yet).Originally Posted by MORT
As somebody else said, LS1 = 5.7L, LS2 = 6.0L. I suspect it is just a newwer version of the GenIII. Kinda like the 3.8L V6 changed to the ecotech in the mid 90's.
Vibrations could be caused by anything. if it only happens at certain speeds (rather than rpm in different gears) I'd be looking at tail shaft uni joints, centre bearings, wheel balancing. If you have had the 1/2 shafts replaced, maybe one isn't balanced too well. Take it back to GMH - they should be able to fix it for you.

NO, it is a totally new block, but, they do say the LS1 heads will fit it and vice versa. Not that you'd want to do it!! Strange thing is though, on paper it is only a 2.6mm difference in bore width and it still has a 92mm stroke!Originally Posted by scott.waldon
Thanks for the help people.
The vibration in question is not a road speed problem becaust it does it at standstill. It seems to me like an out of ballance feeling just at 1000 to 1200 rpm. I thought initially it may have been a leaking valve. If it were a multi carb model i sugest it could be a carb not pulling its weight ie poorly synchronised??
The guys at the dealership say a lot of gen 111s behave poorly like this down low. I hear the difference in firing order may be the cause of imballance also?
Do they have a different firing order and compared to what engines?
Thanks
Mort
My GenIII's runs fine. It isn't the most torquy engine down low but it does run fine. I tow with it 90% of the time and it pulls 2 ton of trailer ok.Originally Posted by MORT
I doubt you would have a carby problem - fuel injection kinda took care of that. It will be a balancing issue somewhere - get them to check the harmonic balancer at the front of the engine for a start.

Hi all,
I was reading about a problem with the Adventra. I am curious about the vibration you have?????? I have a 2004 VY CX8 V8 which has had a vibration at approx 95-100km per hour (around 97km to be precise) I was first told it was the tyres (3 1/2 years ago) which had a feathered effect so you can imagine my surprise when we had the tyres replaced and the vibration is still there. I have had it back to Holden for this problem (this is now the 4th time) 4 years on - and they still cannot find the problem. They have replaced the torque converter 3 times, recondiotioned the auto trans, sent the tail shaft for repairs - centre bearing had play, found gears burnt out in the gearbox, suggested the drive shaft was warped but never changed, the diff was making a noise and found trunions noisy. They fixed this by applying a special glue which eliminated a whirring noise we also had in the car. In the time we have had the car I have taken it back to Holden no less that 15 times (twice the required amount) for issues with this car. Whilst it has all been fixed under warranty the inconvenience and facing the possibility we have a faulty car that we spent $45k on is depressing. Have you heard about any other Adventra's with vibration as we are obviously not the only ones. Holden still has our car and is still investigating but told us they need their courtesy car back and dont know what more they can do??? Does anyone have any suggestions as to what else the problem could be???
Doesn't really help but mine (LX8) does the same - vibration @ 97/99 km/h.
Tyres? Wheels? dunno - would love to find it.
That sucks. I got a VX commodore (for sale now) which is in perfect condition but I get a vibration at speeds of about 100km/h. I just bought a used WK Caprice and it also has a slight vibration. If you can be so kind to let me know what it is when its fixed that would be great. If I get mine fix, I will do the same.
I too took my caprice to holden (didnt care to much about the VX) and they couldnt find the issue. They said replace the tyres but I am sceptical of this.
Bottom line is next time I want the issue looked at I will take it to an independent mechanic not holden.
funny thing... on my VX I once had the front tyres changed and it didnt fix the issue. Then a few months later I got the front tyres changed again and the issue went away. The I bought alloy wheels and changed the rims and is back again.
guys this thread is over 3 years old...
