I'd like to know this too. My series II does it, I've put up with it for over five years.
They were fixed under recall/warranty but I doubt whether Holden would still do it as a 'freebie'
And I'd rather do it myself than take my car to them!

I had this problem with my VY V6 Series 2. I replaced the power steering fluid a few times and added a bottle of Nulon power steering treatment and it has sincestopped doing it. Holden did bring out a new high pressure hose that was meant to fix the problem however a friend who is a mechanic told me that fitting it sometimes does not fix the problem.
I suggest you replace the fluid a few times and then add some Nulon and see how it goes. If that doesn't fix it try some fully synthetic power steering fluid,

you can jack the front wheels off the ground and get a syringe and suck the fluid out of the resevoir, refill it and start the car and turn the steering left to right a few times, stop the engine and repeat the process a few times it will get rid of the old fluid. I put about a litre through mine.

Changing the fluid improved mine drastically too. It only does it once on cold starts now.

It does not take much time. People here are trying to help you (so please spare your "LOLs" for other sites). If you want a simple system for replacing the PS fluid via the filler opening then you may like to read this post. This process could not be easier.

    Changing power steering fluid

I've used the above method and it's quite easy with a squirty bottle sprayer or a large syringe. It's a quick and EASY way.

is this the stuff Nulon Multi-Vehicle Power Steering Fluid - 500mL?

I’m wondering though if i remove some of what’s in the car now since its clean and just top it off with a bottle of that?
Would it make any difference at all? Or just drain the lot and replace the lot with nulon

Easiest way is pull the return line off the reservoir and point it into a container. Pull the other line off the reservoir and stick a small funnel into it. Get someone else to start the car and pour fresh fluid into the funnel and keep going till it comes out clean then stop engine and refit both hoses and top up the reservoir. Keep the funnel full dont let air get in.

The other way just keeps mixing new fluid with old whereas this way completely flushes the system out.

It's a common problem in the vy's, usually it's your steering rack which needs to be replaced and the ends leaking which causes the shudder. My VY ute had it, got it replaced and it was fine.

My current one isn't shuddering... yet.

It's going to come out at a rapid rate of knots when you turn the engine on and 4 litres will go through it in a matter of seconds. Also I think you'd have ot be turning the steering wheel as well otherwise the fluid in the rack won't pump through.
