I've got a VY II SS Commodore and I just can't get the stereo out of the dash. I've gone through multiple stereo removal tools that I've bought on eBay and I just can't get the stereo to slide out. I've probably spent 3 hours all up trying to get it out and end up with the tools bending and no luck.
The previous owner did say that the stereo was replaced with an identical factory Blaupunkt 6 stacker unit due to an issue, and I'm guessing when the new one was slid in, it has gotten stuck somehow.
Does anyone know how I can get it out? I'm looking to get the AUX connectivity done and am fed up with the bad sound quality of FM transmitters. Any help would be appreciated!
Your not alone mate, I too had the same issue with my stock head unit, i had to break the front face plate off to get the bugger out, but i did not car since i installed a new head unit since this one was skipping all over. i do miss the factory finish though.
Make sure you are pushing the tools all the way in, and pushing them both out wards to push the clips into the head unit, then pull while pushing out.
just take it to your local car stereo place im sure they'll charge nothing to 10 bucks
Hi mate,
Mine was a bit stuck so I took the sides of the console and levered it out from inside.
I didnt have the removal tools either I just used kebab sticks to hold the spring clips in while I levered it out.
Looking back it is probably easiest to get to from the bottom front, once you take the cover over the center console.
If you can't do it yourself, or find a stereo place to do it for you drop out to Doncaster and I'll have a crack at it for you.
Cheers
Are you pushing the tools in until they click? This is critical because the notches on the ends of the tools engage a raised part of the spring clips, which is what pulls the headunit out. If you are doing it properly, the tool should be virtually stuck in the headunit until you pull the whole unit out!
Push them in hard until they click, then lever both tools outwards slightly (left tool to the left, right tool to the right) and pull toward you at the same time, it can require some force. I find it easier to do while sitting in the passenger seat.
i had to use me and a mate holding each tool...aftter hours of struggling he grabbed one side and i grabbed the other and it just fell out
Just get some metal coat hangers, cut them about 30cm long... Bend it so they are straight, that should workIt worked a charm for mine. Even if they are slightly out of whack it would at least grab the edges to help pull out.
[BUMP]. *mrs: WTF was that!?!?* *me: nothing, just don't look back -_-*
Good thick coat hanger made up to fit works every time for me takes me about 10 sec to remove a factory head unit
