Hi all, i recently recieved a 'check oil' warning on my display, so i checked and changed oil and filter, origional oil was at correct level and no leaks have been found. However since changing the oil and filter the display still comes up 'check oil' on random start-ups (cold or hot). there is a knocking coming from the engine sometimes loud sometimes quiet. I am aware this means low oil pressure and is not a good thing, but if you get the engine working and hit it to about 3k-4k revs the oil pressure comes back and the light goes away. I have stopped driving for obvious reasons, but i desperatly need to know what is wrong. I was informed by a couple of mechanics this does not sound like a dead pump, because some days it was fine and no noise at all and if the pump was gone it would be a more consistent thing.
Oil went from standard Holden oil (castrol edge I believe) to 15w 50 Nulon and a K&N Oil filter. No change btween new and old oil indicates to me this is not the problem.
Any help appreciated
Check oil pressure with an independent oil pressure gauge. Oil pressure switches are a common failure on the Gen V8s but needs to be diagnosed correctly sooner than later

1. As posted above, definitely have an independent pressure gauge hooked up to check the pressure readings.
2. If low pressure is confirmed, but the pump is OK, I suspect the likely problem is a fault/malfunction with the oil pressure relief valve. ( If that proves to be OK I would probably be inspecting the oil pick up unit next to ensure it is clean and there is nothing impairing oil flow).
Cheers
Well I also thought pressure release valve, but thought it to be too random when the pressure is low, if the valve is malfunctioning wouldn't it be a more persistent problem. I read somewhere you can check if the oil sensor is functioning by looking at the connection and check for oil and dirt, but also read it can be difficult to replace and reconect
Also what does the oil pressure switch do? If it lets the engine know what pressure to maintain this could be the problem but I don't understand why the prussure returns when the engine gets some revs and doesn't drop again. It's usually on a first start occasion but sometimes does it when the engine is at opperating temp, but only ever happens upon startup never while the engine is running
