I'm looking into lowering my Acclaim and trying to figure out what needs doing. My mate told me it's 99.9999% advised you replace the shocks because if you don't there's potential the springs can come loose.
Is that true, and, is it also advised I replace the struts?
Cheers.
What springs are you using?? Generally it is recommended that you get shortened shocks with springs lower than super low as a)your old shocks are probably rooted and b) the shorter shocks suit the springs better
Depends how far you lower it but yes it is possible for the rear springs to fall out as the lowered springs arent as tall as standards so when the standard shock fully extends it allows the spring to fall out.
For this reason its advised to fit matching short travel shocks. Another reason is to keep the shock operating in its intented range with the new ride height.

Well I'm thinking of getting low or super-low (i.e. 30mm or 50mm). I'm leaning more towards 50mm tbh.
Yeah super low would look the best but will def need matching shocks.

Is it worth buying those suspension sets on eBay? I see heaps of shocks/struts/springs packages on eBay for $599, is that a decent price? I haven't made any local calls yet, but what kind of price range have people paid for a proper setup plus installation and all?
$600 is a good deal for King springs and Monroe GT Sport shocks.
I paid about $1000 for king springs, kyb shocks, new strut top bushings and bearings, installation and alignment.
Definitely get new strut top bushings/mounts, because the stock ones will have collapsed by now. It might be worth also getting a rear camber kit if you go for super lows - about $100 + installation, will help prevent excessive rear tyre wear.
