Hey guys sorry for another thread.. After some up to date information as most the threads I found are quiet dated.
So I have a workin key. Running out of battery and I think I should grab a spare. I do have a spare but the buttons are thorn but I think it's out of battery now.
Anyways I went to the locksmith and found out the keys are $110-$150 o.0.
Is there anywhere to get them cheaper (any opinions on the "genuine" Holden keys for $40ish on eBay.. And if I have a working key does that mean I can program the new one myself? If so how would I do that?
I have a 2003 VY Series 1 S Pack.
Cheers guys!
Maybe someone could make a how to or something.. I'll do it with pictures if I can get instructions (doin whatever u needa do in the car) I heard it involves turning a working key in the ignition.

Hey mate,
This might sound strange but I got a quote for a new key for my WH from a locksmith ($110 coded) and then got a quote from a Holden dealer which was actually cheaper ($70 not coded). But where I work we have a scan tool that can code Commodore keys, so my boss let me do it for free haha.
I don't think you can just buy the key and hope it will work. Pretty sure you need to get it coded first, either with a scan tool (a locksmith can just clone the key somehow). I could be wrong though.
I have purchased keys off eBay before for my VS and got them coded at work and haven't had a problem, they cost me $50 each.

Ive read that if u have a working key u can program a partially programmed key (ones off eBay).
U start the car with the working key and so a seq of stuff and can program another key.
VY keys don't go flat as such to be replaced. Yes they go flat from locking/un-locking the car via remote but charge whilst in the ignition when driving. Just take the key for a nice hours' drive.
Get the new buttons for the key if you already have a spare.

I don't think they charge. They are just a lithium battery that lasts for years. I could be wrong though.
I recently changed the lithium battery in my spare key, which worked, but it still has the same problem with unlocking and starting the car. I think I need a new key head, as it locks and opens the boot ok.
'Ah well, I suppose it had to come to this.'
Mm I already cracked opened my old key! Haha didnt break it thou. Lol.
Ordered one of them new shells..
And yeah ive never heard of these battery's (same one that go in many watches) being rechargeable.
I'm gonna ask a watch repairer to replace the battery for me :P

Good luck getting someone to replace the battery!!! These have tabs SOLDERED on to each side of the battery and even a professional watch repairer isn't going to wanna blow himself up soldering a battery.
When I did mine I had to be very careful!!!
There are threads on this if you search.

I've read that jaycar sell batteries with the tabs soldered on. So I'll have a look into this and report back.
confirmed.
