Made an observation the other day with the interior ventilation on my ute and was wondering if anyone else has had any revelations.
I have always noticed the cup holders in the centre console had been quite cool to the touch when the a/c was running. I had assumed that this was because the venting channel to where the vents would be in the sedan still run through. I also assumed that this would have been blocked up to prevent a pressure loss through the other vents.
Much to my amazement i stuck my hand up under the passenger side next to the auto shifter and I could feel air gushing out of the side of it. It looks as though mine is not plugged up at all.
So, was wondering if anyone else has observed this? as I wouldn't mind getting a bit more air pressure out of the vents in the dash after finding a way to plug up the stray outlet in the console.
I managed to pull up the console piece with the cup holders and window switches to get a look at it this afternoon, but it appears that it might need a bit more trim to be taken out to get full access to the air outlet. It might be that when I have had my headunit and phone handsfree installed that they have dislodged something, but I doubt it.
Any ideas people????
perhaps its holdens method of keeping your drinks cool?

Or hot..... I wouldn't put it to Holden to be that clever anyway.Originally Posted by stocky
Speaking of vents... let's take a wander to the exterior of the vehicle. Has anyone ever done a mod to the Guard Flutes (that replace the side indicators) to actually act as an exhaust vent? This would have been the logical thing to do to start with, but heah...

I heard they serve no purpose to exhaust at all........Originally Posted by vy_acclaim
They don't - they're purely aesthetic. Could have been a real feature for a little effort on Holden's part - shame.Originally Posted by ardseidel

i have a vz and same deal-has air coming out back of the console
would like to know if this is just because holden could not be bothered to change for the ute or if it serves some other purpose
i find it just blows cold air straight towards the cabin vents which seems a waste
if its under warranty and u think it mite be a prob, take it to City Holden. we do a gr8 job with warranty. but just remember. our labour prices r a little steeper if it turns out not to be warranty. it is a dash out job. and our trim expert will take great care of your car

Have already had the damn thing back under warranty twice in the 6 months i have had it :b:Originally Posted by Holden_Mechanic
mine has no problem, but the interior in the ute gets too cold and i have to turn it off frequently, that probably where climate control comes in handy
ok obviosly if ur happy wit ya local dealer, (Metro) why change.Originally Posted by vystorm_adel
what other warranty probs have you had if i may ask?
To date i've had it back for:Originally Posted by Holden_Mechanic
1. The squealing/scraping rear brakes, where they fitted the 'handbrake adjustment kit'.
2. A water leak onto the front left passenger floor that couldn't be traced but ended out stinking out the cabin with the damp carpet for a few days. It hasn't appeared since.
3. Peeling/flaking paint/coating on the left rear quarter window rubber which they replaced the whole window and rubber (minus the tint). Will post some pics of this later in the probs with VY's thread in case any one else has had the same dramas. I know it used to be bad on the VS window rubbers, but I would have thought that it had been cured by now.
All relatively minor issues but annoying none the less.
Firstly - G'day to everyone as I am a first time Forum User.
I have a new VZ SSZ ute which I've just installed a new sound system into. While I had the console pulled to bits I saw that the air vent under the console does end on the left hand side beside the gear shifter. It has 2 screws that seure it to the console at it's end. I left mine open as there is a electrical controll box of some sort right at the back of the console attached to the top of the floor arch that I thought may need some sort of air flow. Plus I am real happy with the airflow through the vents as is. The thing nearly blows ya hair out.
As for waranty jobs, when the vehicle was 450Km's old the pasanger side exterior plastic trim that runs up the roof FEL OFF!
While I was installing the sound system I found LOTS of water sitting under the driver side carpet where ya feet go. There are some threads just on this matter.
The ute is in for it's 3000K service at the moment so I'll find out what the outcome is this arvo.
Be interesting to see what you find out about the water. From what I was told, the front end of my car was soaked/drowned to see if there was a leak and they found nothing, and it hasn't happened since. Might have just been a blockage in the AC drainage, who knows....

How could you make this work without damaging the structural integrity of the front end? And how much benefit would such vents provide in the real world?
Have a look under the bonnet of a VZ SS, taking note of the locations of the strut towers, brake booster and powertrain control module and then explain to me how Holden could've possibly undertaken such an exercise without going to great lengths for no apparent benefit...
But back to the original topic - If your car was a sedan, I'd say that it sounds like the pipe which supplies air to the rear ventilation outlets has been dislodged. But you have a ute, so maybe the plugs which block the outlets for the rear have fallen out or something. Should be an easy fix, either way.
Installing the vents dosn't diminish the structural integrity of the panel... I'm not a mechanical engineer, so could not comment on the effect that ducting would have on the structural integrity of the chassis; but I'm sure that if such an enhancement could have been made cost effectively, then it would have. I assumed that by having two external exhausts and two external intakes (bonnet and radiator grille), that the engine could be cooled more effectively... granted a great deal of ducting, etc would probably be needed, but would have been awesome none the less. I come from a computer enthusiast background, where the elimination of heat was of high priority. No doubt this line of thought has stayed with me, as I am constantly looking for ways to cool anything that generates heat... lol. I just feel like the vents were an after thought - an aesthetic enhancement. Had the vents been incorporated into the initial design, I don't see why they couldn't have been a functional component...Originally Posted by clixanup

Remove the plastic insert inside the wheel arch and have a good long look under there. Then come back and tell me that the quarter panel vents could have been made functional.Originally Posted by vy_acclaim
The point is that at speed (when the vents would be working) there is sufficient airflow from the front and underneath of the car to cool the exhaust. The side vents would contribute nothing at all to the cooling of anything.
As far as cooling goes, a car is nothing like a computer. It moves through the air, and is designed to take advantage of the cooling benefits this motion provides. If they just sat still like a computer case, I'd agree with you 100%, but they don't.
I'll take your word for it. I was just floating an idea to see if anyone had this area; obviously not - so it's all good.Originally Posted by clixanup

Took the dash apart today, found the vent/pipe that leads nowhere.
So I just taped it up, no more extra cool console.
Did the same myself on saturday. Ended up just shoving a rag in there.
LOL........ Another great half-arsed design with no thought for the customer. Well done again Holden!!!
Here's a new sales pitch...
'Buy a new Holden ute,......... looks great, goes like a rocket and comes with a free pair of socks (stuffed in the console).'![]()
I also have the air blowing under the centre console, but don't really want to fix it. I find it very hard to believe that Holden did this "accidentally". I would think that the ute has the same aircon and fan system as the sedans, so they didn't want to increase the standard pressure that comes out of the main vents. I think the pressure coming out is already excellent, any more would freeze!!![]()
Honestly, I wouldn't put anything past Holden these days. If you think about it though blocking it off would be no different to the vents facing the rear seats being closed and not being used.
