Does anyone know whether the 2003 VY Series 1 Sedans have the digital speedo?
My VY series II had it, but in the hidden functions. Turn ignition off, then hold "mode" + "set" down while turning the ignition to the "ON" position and it should come up with a serial/version number. Then keep pressing mode until you see "SPEED".
I think it's a tech 2 thing, that has to be enabled.
depends what you want. The hold and set method will only work temporarily (read: once you turn the car off you need to do it again).
The tech2 turn it on permanently but it removes the speed alert function. The speed is also written in bold when the tech2 is used (the mode + set method is in normal text)
Yes my series 1 has it. but the writitng is too small to be used
I'm in the same boat as giannetto. Never use it though, as posted above; the font is way to small.
I think you will find that it is part of the "cop code" which can only be activated with tech2.A mate of mine has it in his series 1 BT1 ex Sth.Aust. cop car he bought at auction. At a recent service at the dealer they removed it as he told it is illegal to have. After a discussion over the vehicle having it when he bought it they reactivated it for him.
Digital Speedo is available.
There are 2 ways to get it
1. (Temporary) (meaning that when you turn the car off it is gone until you manually turn it on again). To turn it on hold MODE AND SET buttons in while turning the car on. This will give you digital speedo as well as many other diagnostic features. The speedo is small with this method.
2. (Permanent) Take the car to you local holden dealer and get them to enable "Police Mode". This mode gives you digital speedo permanently in the menu and is BIG, but you will lose the overspeed alert. I have mine enabled this way and I don't even use the anologue speedo anymore. This method needs the TECH 2 equipment plugged in that you local holden dealer will have. It takes them about 2 minutes and if your nice to them they will enable it for free(Mine did anyway), Or just ask them to turn it on when you take the car in for the next service.

For what possible reason could it be illegal??? Apart from if you know exactly what speed you're doing you might not get busted speeding, therefore less money in their already over-flowing coffers. Mongrels!!Originally Posted by wazza 42

My VYII SV8 doesn't have it (yet) but one of my mates has just picked up VZ SV6 and that's got it. He got it with 9000kms on the clock and I'm sure the old dude before him didn't have it turned to "Police Mode". Does anyone know if the VZ had it by default?
with the cop mode you do lose the speed alert but in its place you get digital speed and speed trap which is when you press set it saves your current speed which can be accessed with the arrow key. also when in cop mode and digital speedo is showing the radio display will not be show on the console.
VZ has it enabled standard & its not illegal

It is good to have a digital speedo, so you know what speed you are at exactly when ur on cruise control, but it does cost a bit for the tech2 thing. I have spoken to a few holden dealers, and some want to charge me $96 and others $40, but I've read in other threads that people got it done for free and it only takes like 2 minutes... weird...
try asking for it when you take the car in for a service. If its already on the tech2 im sure they wouldnt mind doing it for peanuts
Cool cool... thanks... I'll try that...Originally Posted by maxy0987
I much prefer the speedo on the dial anyway.
I find it easier to read especially in your peripheral vision or when you quickly glance down, you can tell your speed just by the position of the needle. I find with a digital speedo I'm taking my eyes off the road for too long. Just my opinion...
Good point, but the digital speedo does look nice when ur cruising... it helps coz u'll know whats ur exact speed is when u put cruise control on... oh well, might just leave that too... coz i still do like my normal needle speedo... its nice...![]()

Seriously, I'm trying to see things from your point of view but I can't get my head that far up my arse!!
Have found it useful, prefer the digital readout as my previous car only had a digital readout.
When I got my car last serviced I asked them if they could enable it. (police Mode)
I got mine enabled for nix. Although one dealer wanted to charge me $40 and book it into a time slot.
I missed the speed alert for a little while but now I would never go back to some bing bong sound telling me when I am over speed.
The digital speedo is very accurate +/- 1 KM going by GPS speed indicators and allows for precise cruise control setting.
I still use my analogue speedo sometimes. Depends on where I am driving.
Give it a go.. I'm glad I did.
I got mine turned on for $27. Does anyone know if there is more cool stuff like that that can also be enabled??? Like rpm, and coolent temp???
I liked the speedo as all of our work cars have it on. I shot down to the local dealer that's actually the same dealer where all of our work cars get serviced just to look into getting it put on. The guy just went and grabbed the Tech 2device, asked me to show him where my car was. Then he jumped in, plugged the thing in and did it on the spot. It took all of a minute.
I was surprised they even gave me the time as it was middle of the day (lunch time), dozens of cars being serviced and a lot of people arriving to pick their cars up.
its a very good way of finding any problems with your speedo. i had to take apart my dash a few months ago and after reinstalling it, i had a feeeling the speedo was out. when i turned on the digital speedo it was about by about 10-20km, so they do have a purpose sometimes

i guess it would be hand in the knowledge of exact speed, but at the same time, and im not saying im special, after driving any car for a while, you can kind of know your speed without looking at the speedo, its merely a reference to me to make sure im doing the speed limit (majority of the time).
im contemplating the digital speedo, just to give it a go.
on my sisters civic, it has the digital speedo situated off the top of the dash, so its always in your vision, really handy, your eyes dont leave the road at all
