Default Door Side Skirts

Hey guys - on the weekend a mate and I decided it was time to rip off the black skirts on the exterior of the doors on my VY.

One small problem - the silicone they seem to have used wont budge. We ripped off the back right door plastic, and got the glue off fine. Its this black silicone that we cant move - heat gun, paint prep from the auto store, left it in the sun - nothings working !!

Anyone had a similar problem? Im just about out of ideas - maybe back to the shop to be sanded and resprayed.

I thought about doing this with my vy. If you get the glue off let me know,
also get some pics when it is finished so that we can see what it looks like

I've heard that fishing line works and problem is with a razor or sand paper one slip of the hand can result in scratching the duco then you end up getting it resprayed

Or you could get them color coded to match the car

Hmmm, is it the same stuff they use to stick the badges on??

I took off the Commodore badge on my boot lid, and the gooey stuff came off with methylated spirits. I then polished up the paint underneath and it turned out perfect. Just a thought...

i think the stuff on the badges is just a strong bond double sided adviesive tape. The sicaflex stuff I used to fit some calais door strips on my s pack. i wonder if maybe you try some fishing line? i know its reccomended to remove badges and I've had success with it myself, but perhaps if you wet the sicaflex and then try "saw" it off with fishing line??

it shouldnt be that hard...i removed the door moulds off my vs s pack and never had any troubles with the resin left over.

I used a hair dryer and a cloth to remove it once and it worked.

Most polyurethane sealants/adhesives can only be removed machanically once they are cured. The best way (that I know of) is to make a scraper out of either perspex/polycarbonate or wood. You need to file the scraper off to a chisel-like edge. If you use wood, you can choose how hard the scraper will be and minimise the chances of causing damage to paint or other material. eg. pine will make a fairly soft scraper but it is less effective and becomes "blunt" quicker. The good thing about softer wood is that it will conform to the profile of the surface you are working on. Perspex/polycarbonate works best but must be used very carefully; that's what we use on aircraft and it doesn't normally damage paint or aluminium.

It is urethane honestly it will take a lot of time to remove it and you will be lucky if you dont damage the paint.
Go to a panlebeater and get them to do it for you.
The people that have removed it before have prolly only had double sided tape on them after previous work had been done

yep, not easy at all, i started with the left hand side of my car and it still remains on there, the sikaflex that is, i'd recommend, if you have an executive removing as much of the sikaflex as you can with a stanley knife or similar, taking care and get the colour coded strips put on.

or just leave it altogether. I now have to get the doors repainted as i scratched them up a bit.

Or just paint the strips. I've done this and I think it looks quite good. However, my car is white which was quite easy to get a good colour match.
