I'm not far away from doing my vy, but done a mates not long ago.
I went thru on drivers side up top, there is wires going thru there but be careful not to damage the other wires.
I ran the power cable under the plastic door trims next to the drivers and back seats, very quick and easy, you can also pull the back seat out in 2 mins to get the wire thru to the boot, makes a neater job of it.
That's how i did it anyways...

I went through the firewall on the passengers side. There is a black rubber grommet where other cables are running through. I just poked a tiny hole through the grommet and shoved the amp power wire through it.

Like juzsvy, I ran the wire under the plastic of the door sills. Mine only had to go to under the passenger seat though, so I've got no tips on running it to the boot...

clutch hole in the fire wall if its auto or find another suitable hole u can feed it through. then again run the power and remote wire for the amp under the drivers side plastic scuff plates, under the rar seat to the boot. then run the rcas down the passenger side to avoid alternator wine. then mount ur amp were u want it make the earth as short as possible for best ground clean the grounding point thoroughly so its bare metal on bare metal, then wire it up and turn it on.

if it is a manual, unfortunately there is no spare holes and you will need to drill a hole in the firewall yourself. (I had an autoelectrician do it for me.)

I'm guessing you have a single disc player?
If you have a 6 disc player you can get a mod of phreddy, run a search and you'll find him.
You can replace the deck with single din, i think they make a mould that fits straight into your dash to take up the space, has a pocket in it from memory.
I've seen these for sale at autobarn.

What did you do to yours? I havent really had a look at mine properly but the main things were the head-deck, did you have any problems or things i might have trouble with? What did you use to fill the hole? What did you do about the factory speakers? Thanks

I have a VY series 2 SS this is what i bought and it sounds beautiful.

-Aerpro ISO to bare wire plugs, allows you to use the existing wiring without cutting anything
-Aerpro in fill panel to cover the hole up
-Aerpro aerial adapter so you can plug it into the aftermarket deck deck
-Grilles for the back of parcel tray
    -Wiring kit

Thats what you need to get it so you can put all the aftermarket stuff in

What i have in the car is:

    Alpine CDA-9857 head deck
Alpine 6*9 speakers in the parcel tray
    Alpine MRP-F450 4 channel amp
im using the standard door speakers and it sounds amazing

Its not easy took me a day to do because i stuffing around ALOT i was originally gonna keep head OEM head deck but didnt want to cut wires to get the speaker to RCA converter installed.
The way i have dont mine i can take the aftermarket head deck out and put the OEM one back in and everything works as normal its great.
if you have any questions ask me and if you want the part number of any of that aerpro stuff just ask and ill find it.
Also everyting i used came from northfield they are excellant and not up them self wankers like people from JB and the like

How does that iso to bare plug thing work? Does it look ok? like does the headdeck look out of place? What grilles do you mean, couldnt you just use the ones you get with the 6x9's? Thanks

here are some photos. In regards to the plug i used it plugs straight into the socket that the OEM head deck plugs into and the other end has bare wires to wire up your aftermarket head unit - very good way of doing it as you can put the OEM head deck back without cutting any wires. The grilles i bought look alot better than the ones that come with the speakers as it looks like a standard calais the way they are.

That makes it look hard lol How do the factory speakers sound? I was thinking about going down to strathfield or somewhere and getting them to install the head-deck and amp, that way i dont stuff anything up and then install the subs myself and keep the factory speakers for the moment, what do you think? Was it easy to install the 6x9's? And do you know what size/shape the door speakers are? Thanks

its not hard at all as long as you have an idea of what your doing.

Im actually very happy with the way my install turned out didnt destroy anything on the car except the holes i made in the parcel tray for the 6*9's.

The factory speakers are actually pretty good i can turn they up really loud and they dont distort its great. I will probably put better ones in eventually as the ones in the parcel tray that are amplified can go alot louder than the OEM ones. I dont know what the OEM speakers look like or what size they are maybe post a topic in the audio section. Im after a device so i can use my steering wheel controls to operate the head deck, jsut have to find someone in australia that sells this one:

I grounded my amp by drilling a self tapping screw into the car body near my amp you can do that or just put it onto a bolt thats close baby seat latch will do as the bolt goes into the body.
I bough the fascia from a place called wow sight and sound in brisbane, but autobarn can get it in for you its a Aerpro product product code 'FP9045' to suit VY monaro/commdore. - its very easy to install. If you have any questions when your doing it PM me ill be happy to help you.

If i did it myself i would probably order the head-deck and amp off ebay coz its fairly cheap, does autobarn also have the connector and aerial thing? What does the aerial thing do?

yeah autobarn will sell it part number for the Aerpro aerial adapter is AP349 and the plug you want is APP7201. Note that the plug is made for european vehicle head decks, but i can assure you it is the correct one do not go off the aerpro website its not correct i made that mistake the first time.
The reason is that blaupunkt the manufacture of the OEM head deck is german, hence the reason why you need the aerial adapter as the aerial plug is european.

What did those 3 cost roughly? Have you or anyone had any bad experiences buying off ebay? Was it easy to install the 6x9's?

the aerial thing cost $9 fascia $27 and wiring plug thing $19. 6*9 easy to install screwed them straight to the body, cut out the holes in the parcel shelf thing put the grilles and all done. its not a hard process if you understand what to do before you start. so understand what you have to do before you start it.

The factory door speakers are 6 inch, 5 Watt, paper cone, made in Korea jobs. They are really quite crappy. You can replace them with better 6" speakers or you can even get 6.5 inch speakers in there with a little cutting/filing.

As for getting Strathfield or the like to do the install - *cringe*
