If you don't use your aircon every day and if your drain holes a partially blocked then the water that lies at the bottom of the evaporator can get a real moldey/mildew smell.
Even if your drain holes are ok you can still get the smell during times of high humidity as moisture will stay attached to the core even with the A/C off.
My 2c's worth.
Cheers Col.

you will need to take it to a place where they regas air conditioners and get them to check it, sounds like the dryer / condensor may need replacing.

I think that there is also a spray that you can get from supercheap or any auto shops, which you spray down the airconditioning duct to get rid of the smell.

Make sure your drain holes a clear, I can get to mine (VS) from under the car, above the transmission and use your a/c more often.
Because mine has climate control I never turn mine off, summer or winter, just set it to between 21-23degC.
My wifes pulsar's drain hole rubbers are a bit stiff so they don't open up unless the bit of water in the tray and it gets that musty/mildew smell if you haven't used it in a couple of days especially in humid weather.
