Default probs with my new vy berlina

im 18 just purchased my first car, a vy series 1 berlina 2002 model. already noticed 2 problems with it, and one sounds like the common power steering shudder, and another one, which happens when im doing over 80km/h and put on the brakes, the steering wheel begins to wobble a bit too much, any one had this same prob, or have any ideas what it could be?

any help would be appreciated thnx

Not 100 % certain on the brake problem but you might want to get the disks checked for run out (any wobble as they revolve),if there is this will make the brakes 'pulse' as you apply them, possibly felt thru the pedal but at 80 k's may also show up as steering wobble as the brakes are applied unevenly from side to side.Another possibility is that you may also want to check suspension bushings/joints incase there's any excess play which could also show up as steering wobble at speed.

steering shudder is very common on vy's. I reckon not to worry too much until it gets worse. See if you could take it to a mechanic for a check up.

The slight steering vibration during light braking at high speeds is almost certainly warped front disc brake rotors, which is fairly common on VY's with a few km's on them. Replacement front rotors cost $180 - $300 depending on brand, plus fitting.

Don't know if you have mobile disk machiners in OZ,in NZ guys in vans come and machine them on the vehicle,or you could take them off yourself and take them to a brake shop where they will true them up.Might be cheaper than replacements?

Yep. My local garage has the service, charge $50 a pair to have them machined on the car. I have a similar slight vibration although it has never been enough to worry about. Apparently common with VT-VZ?

for the steering shudder when turning, could just be low on fluid. top it up and check that the 'S' bend cooler hoses arent leaking, about 75% of them do after a while because they arent tightened properly from factory.
the hoses are low down infront of the engine on drivers side, kinda behind where a fog light would be.
Also you could add a power steering shudder hose, they come on the ss's i think

Excellent choice of first car. Well done. I had the same shudder in the brakes. Being fussy bugger I took it back to the dealer and they machined all the disc's. No problems after that. Apparently the BA falcons were even more pronounced with this problem and that was caused over time by the outer wall of the ventilated disk warping from the rapid heating and cooling.

I thought the shudder was also to do with the ABS kicking in.
