VY Instrument Clusters. Want a Final Answer for All!
Ive been reading a lot about VY vlusters between different models and wanted a conclusion. I was looking at changing mine (std exec cluster), and putting a V8 calais with the 3 windows in. Being that Mine is a Series 1, do I have to make sure I get a Series 1 Calais to?
In basic terms, Do all series 1 interchange with each other no matter if its a v8 or v6, and same with all series 2's? I am aware of getting holden to reprogram the kms and calibrate the speedo. Is there anything else I should be aware of?
Cheers.

Avoid trouble!
My understanding is that if you install a Series 2 cluster in a Series 1 car, then the fuel guage will work back to front. Because of this, the DTE (distance to empty) function of the trip computer will be useless.
If you do install the wrong one, it can be corrected by replacing the fuel sender unit at a cost of about $400 - best to get the right one. There have been claims that this can be corrected by software means, but detail has not been provided when I have chased it.
The Tech2 calibration can set V6 or V8 as necessary. There is no difference in the clusters for the different engines.
I have a Series 2 Calais cluster in my shed to put in my Executive when I get the time. It is brand new, and cost me less than $200 on Ebay. I was very careful to check the Part Number before buying as I had been caught before. I managed to sell the incompatiable Statesman cluster for what I paid for it.
I was bidding for a Series 2 on Ebay, and as the auction close time approached, something went wrong with the Ebay site. The buyer got a real bargain because no bids got through over the lat ten minutes. However, it turned out to be a Clayton's bargain as he ended up having to pay the $400 to change the fuel sender unit, making the total cost more than a new one through Holden.
If you buy from Holden, the cluster should cost between $400 and $500. They appear cheaper on Ebay occasionally, but there is a higher risk of getting stuck with the wrong series.

Thanks. Thats basically what I needed to no. So its pretty safe to say that if you want to replace, make sure you stay with your series, otherwise you'll have fuel readings backwards.

I Have a VY Calais and bought a VY Berlina Dash Cluster which looks exactly the same. I Installed it and found the Fuel Gauge was backwards (As stated in the above thread).
The Distance to Empty is Backwards as well (ie When Petrol is Full, the D.T.G. is 0.
But, the Fuel Used is still accurate. I drive around with this dash in. When I fill up, I Reset the Trip Meter and then as I Drive, I keep an eye on the Fuel Used. When it gets closer to the 70Lts Used, its time to fill up. Seems to be fine for me.

Why don't you wanna clock k's on the original one?? Are you going to put it back when you sell your car?? Mate, thats no good!!! you have to be honest when selling you car if it has the wrong k's done. I'm gonna feel very sorry for future owners of that car. Thats downright stupid if thats what you're intending to do.
How would you feel if you found out the car you bought has much higher k's done than stated at the time of sale?? And that you'd paid heaps for it??
If I'm under wrong impression here then please explain why.

I want a VY S style cluster, purely for the different looking gauges. Is is possible to chop and change between my standard cluster and an S cluster to get the same kilometers and have the fuel gauge working?

Aren't they km's kept stored somewhere as well.
They can be checked to match the display is about the same.

If you brought a used cluster without knowing how many k's were on it, can you do a system check of some sort before installing the cluster?

Yes, I bought a series 2 "s" cluster but only ended up using the printed plate and facia panel, which inserted perfectly into my cluster. I therefore had no need to reprogram/calibrated etc. The needles needed to be removed which is no problem if you are careful.

just power it up, the odo will display & system check will run, it will log codes if its not in a car or the configuration is incorrect
