Question Help Buying a VY S

    Hey Guys/Girls,

I come to this forum in need of some assistance in buying a VY S Commodore. Ive test driven a couple of 03 autos (would rather a manual) and seemed fine however the 03 manual i drove today had a slight whine sound (gearbox?) and had generally more noise than the autos when accelerating in the lower gears.

Is this a sign of something on its way out? Or is it quite normal for a manual? Ill be trying to test drive some other manuals in the future to see for myself but it seems they are quite rare at the moment.

The car itself is a 2003 VY S comodore which is so I'm told stock except for the 18" wheels of a SS and has done 74000 k's.

    Any help is much appreciated..

    Cheers,
    Mark

    Series 1 or 2?

Sounds about right for a pricing in the yard but your better off going private I reckon.

generally a bit of whining is common from the 5 sp manual, definatley shouldn't be any from the auto

5 speed gearbox whine is absolutely normal and one you get used to it, it isn't a bother. I bought mine brand new in Feb 2003 and brought it back because of the whine. Holden went to great lengths to check and test it before sending me a letter to confirm it was within specification limits and would not get worse (which is hasn't). They also let me drive another VY S manual with the same km's at the time (about 1000km) and it was exactly the same.

Get extractors and a cat back system on it and you won't even hear it. That was my fix anyway!!!
