Hi guys, I want to change my gearbox oil (VYSS S1) but I'm not sure what oil it takes. There is no gregorys manual out for the VY yet so I asked at holden and they said Dextron IIIwhich is Auto/pwr steer fluid and didn't seem right to me. Any ideas? Also, how much oil does it take?
Thanks heaps,
Shaun.
They are referring to auto transmission fluid, which is correct. Power steering runs on auto tranny fluid.
There is an aftermarket "Ellery" manual out that can be bought through book shops and I bought one via Ebay. It has more typo's than it should although it does include all specifications for fluids etc. Very handy for that purpose.
Thanks buddy. When I looked at the guy from holden funny he showed me their service booklet and it said dextron III for the 6spd manual! I know it sounds ridiculus but it was there in black and white. Maybe It's just Ferntree Gully Holden![]()
Dextron III is what they recommend but you can also use a synthetic auto fluid that i used (castrol) and it did make the shifts a bit smoother. Mine holds 4 litres (vz ss) but vy should be the same. Hope this helps.

They even use it in the 5 speeds... 1 of our old apprentices learnt this when he assumed the easy **** 75/90 went in lol
I WISH MY GRASS WAS EMO SO IT WOULD CUT ITSELF
OK, Straight from the workshop manual;
T56 6 speed manual
Dexron III
3.9 litres capacity
M35 Getrag 260 5 speed manual (V6)
80w gear oil
1.2 litres capacity
M34 Getrag 290 5 speed manual (V8)
80w gear oil
1.8 litres capacity
4L60-E 4 sp auto
Dexron III
V6 refill 4.8 litres (7.9 total capacity)
V8 refill 5 litres (10.6 litres cap)
Funny how the 6sp manual and auto take the same fluid - I would never have guessed!
use castrol transmax Z, worked well for me.
