VYsII auto trans....does it have a limiter?

Hi have a VYsII AUTO station wagon. This is the second time I've noticed this - my mistake of course. I pulled up at the lights and geared down to first manually. Still in first I take off and the car revs to about 5500 rpm and it automatically shifts into 2nd, but the lever and computer display still show first.

I then manually shift it into drive and continue on driving as normal. WTF?

That is precisely how they work, prevents engine over rev in first gear, this is in addition to the limiter on the engine as well.

Can the engine limiter being removed?

Tee hee, I did the same thing ages ago in my SS. Except I didn't manually put it into 2nd. After the gearbox changed into 2nd, I left the shifter in 1st and just backed off. When the revs/speed came down, the gearbox changed back into 1st and nearly put me through the windscreen with engine braking!
