depends where you get the parts and whether or not you can do the labor yourself..

if you can source all the parts from a wrecker you should be able to pick up the box with everything else needed for the conversion for less then a grand.

if you cant do the labor yourself, you'll be looking at another grand or so for someone to do it for you. you may have trouble finding a mechanic thats willing to take it on as well, it can be a bit of a pain.. especially changing the peddle box over

Not even close. I was quoted approximately $9,000 for a conversion. (VY SS)

geesus! was that using new parts from holden or something?

for a vy v6, should be able to pick up the parts from a wrecker for a decent price. you could buy a whole written off car at auction for far less then $9000, then you'd have all the parts you need and then some.

but for an ss, there was a bloke selling a t56 manual conversion for a genIII in the quokka last week for $2800 from memory.

im looking at converting my car to manual in the not so distant future. i want to put a t56 in but i cant get an answer from anyone as to whether or not this will work with an ecotec

bravotwozero: fluxx's quote was a fair bit underpriced , but whoever told you nine grand is mad! i know t56's are a lot dearer than a factory v6 manual gearbox, but still. maybe that was for a new gearbox and parts? i would buy a second handie (re-built) off mel wood automotive (Qld i think) and yeah go from there.

fluxx: it will work (t56 for a v6) but would be a massive overkill for a v6 unless fairly extreme work was undertaken to the v6 first, 6th gear would be unusable on a v6 stock and still fairly unusable even on a modded v6 if it still had the standard 3.08:1 diff ratio, however this depends on the t56 you buy as there are several different ratio's in them all. however i would highly recommend if you do undetake this that the diff ratio be changed to a 3.55:1 or a bigger number from there. do a bit of research first (trust me it will be worth looking into it all first). if the diff ratio was changed to 3.55 you would still have good fuel economy as it would only be revving at around 2000-2100 rpm at a guess (on a t56, at 100km/h) also just saying, but you wouldn't be able to buy a v6 gearbox and pedal box and all other bits for 1k, more like 2k-2.5k with manual loom etc etc, my surgestion is to trade in you auto at wreckers as well as that will help! about the t56 but, give mal wood a call aswell, cause he has the bellhousing you need to fit the t56 to the back of the v6 and could organise a clutch, and a gearbox (if needed), and answer all your questions about it

to the op: it can be done, but with all the mucking (remove m and replace with f) around and the fact the car is then not an original manual, my surgesstion to you is to simply change your car over for a original manual. even though it will cost you a little (not much more) to swap cars rather than gearbox's you will be rewarded with a better re-sale value later.

well good luck to all, if i have helped please use the scales (and say who its from)

    cheers to all
    Matt

thanks mate, just what i wanted to know.

the reason i wanted to go to the 6sp is because ill be supercharging the car soon and from what ive heard the getrag 5sp wont be able to handle the power. changing the diff gears will definitely be on the cards too.

Na if you did the conversion you can wave good bye to your factory waranty unless you got holden to do it and even then it would probibly void it and cost you a bomb in labour as well.

i gave mal wood a call the other day. they quoted me $6100 for a 6 speed manual conversion for my v6. this included a fully reconditioned box with the gear ratios modified to better suit the v6, brand new clutch, peddles, trim parts, cross member, wiring, hydraulics etc etc etc and a tail shaft on exchange basis.

sounds pricey and second hand parts would be a hell of a lot cheaper but they definately sound like the place to go if you want someone who knows what they're on about.
