    Default Coolant level

    I've done a stupid thing.

Needed to refil the washer water, and as I was in a hurry, emptied a 3L bottle of water into the coolant reservior by mistake.

Now, realizing my mistake and the wife having driven the car for a couple of days, I've checked the level and it is obvisouly over the maximum marker.

Do I need to be worried about this? I'm driving the car a long distance this weekend.

    Firstly welcome to JC...

The excess amount of water in the cooling system would have drained away via the overflow hose.
If you wish you could unscrew the reservoir, access is up through the front bumper, empty and then replace to the correct level.
Although the excess will drain away your coolant concentration will be diluted.

When was your coolant last changed?

Did you overfill it with coolant (concentrate or premix) or water?

Thanks Wagon Man, for the welcome, and the advice.

The level has stayed over the maximum mark though, so does this mean enough hasn't drained out the overflow?

I'm not too sure when the coolant was last changed. Holden serviced it up too 45k, then that service was done my mate at a local garage, and he wouldn't have done it without me asking. I've had the car since July 06, and done about 9k in it without it being done.

    Should I be doing it?

You will be fine for travelling this weekend , it will be ok being over the maximum mark.

The coolant change interval is 50,000km or two years.

Get your mate to change the coolant at its next service.

Make sure he also adds the coolant pellets (avaible at Holden).

    Sweet.

    It's a couple of k's shy of 50, so I'll get it done at it's 60k service.

    Cheers again.

i spoke to holden and they told me coolant is every 5 years on the vy, mines and 02 vy ss 5.7ltr, so are the v6's and v8's different in intervals? i thought they were every 5 years the change, you should be ok, with your level as stated the excess will make its way out of the overflow tube, i always put just a bit over the max mark, not alot over though, just a little bit over the max line, water is ok to top up with.
