hey, this is stupid and i know it, but i launched out of a side st onto the highway yesterday, and it didn't pick up fast enough, so I through it into Neutral, revved and back into first. the wheels smoked as expected, and then it got stuck in either 2nd or 3rd, it wouldn't change up to forth at 80k, and 4500rpm. and the check engine warning came on. so when I hit a straight bit of highway i put it into neutral, and turned off the engine, then restarted it and put it back into drive after the system check said OK! then i got back 4th gear.
Was this some kind of safety cut off from smoking the wheels.
and for those people that i know are gonna add their 2 cents "you shouldn't thrash your car etc." yes i know, but it was a **** situation with heaps of traffic and i saw a gap and took it, didn't know my car wanted to stay in 3rd gear rather than downshift. hence I freaked cos i wanted the revs to accelerate and get out of the way of the car I pulled out in front of.

Heres my 2 cents... you can kill an engine/transmission doing what you did... 3 weeks ago my cousin tried doing a burnout in his magna, revved it in neutral and dropped into drive, 3k later a whole new engine and transmission. My friend also has a v6 VT commo, did what you do, and now his car has problems shifting when he is driving at about 80km/h (my guess is its 3rd to 4th gear). That is probably the worst thing you can do to an auto... don't do it again![]()
so you wanted to gain speed, so you dropped it back to neutral. I don't understand?
same as popping the clutch in a manual to bring up revs quicker, this used to work in old school holdens and fords, without too much hassle, but if you tried it even once in a vn-vq you would crack the flex plate that holds the stally on. I guess the made the gearboxes stronger these days, but yeah i won't try it again. but damn the smoke was good, didn't gain speed too fast that way but.
