it looks like a trans leak to me, from where the photo looks to be taken.

Ok they rekon that the leak isnt under warrnty some how :S So im in dispute with the car company atm Just a question is it hard to change that seal? It looks like it is considering the gearbox would have to come out. Plus they said it would take them 2 hours to replace my back shocks and 1 n half to do my brake pads at $99hr I can do this myself but i would then void the warrinty.

warranty is not void by changing your shocks or brake pads yourself

if you did your own gearbox oil change and the gearbox blew because you used the wrong grade of oil then that would not be covered by warranty

3.8's were notorious for this leak, it's the rear main engine seal. Haven't checked but was told by a mechanic once that to change the seal was a reasonably big job compared to the amount of oil you will actually weep out over the car's life. My VY hasn't started doing it yet but the VR I had (for 2 years) never once dropped oil on the drive, the leak was that minimal. Give it a wipe and see how long it takes before a substantial amount reforms, if it is quite bad then go the warranty route. As for $99/hr for a pad change I suppose because I've always done my own this sounds like a rip off to me. $40 odd bucks ($NZ) for a set of pads that do both sides & the same at the other end then 30 minutes of my time and it's done.As for voiding the warranty if you do it, sounds to me like the car sale's trying to pull your todger.

Mate, they are ****in in your pocket big time!!!
2 Hours to change out rear shocks!!!!! That is B/S !!!!
They want $350 labour to change out shocks and pads alone!!! NO WAY!
If they are a proper workshop and cant do it in half an hour they should not be in buisness!!!!! Even if they quoted 1 hour for any dramas etc... but 2 hours????? Get out of here!!
They should also be able to change the pads much faster than that!!! But if you add some time to roadtest vehicle and extra bleeding if required, 1 hour may come close!
I would hate to know how long it will take them to do ur rear engine main leak!
Good luck!

Looks more like a sump gasket to me.Also the sumps from VT's onwards also had problems of cracking and also being porus (leaking oil).Remember replacing a rear main seal is a big job you have to remove the gearbox. So you would have to allow some time roughly 3 to 5 hrs.
