Buttons on steering wheel

On next door's neighbor's VY wagon he asked me how to remove the buttons and I backed off because of airbag issues and didn't want to open my mouth about it in case there could be an injury... what is the proper way and how to do it? where can you disable the airbag from going off? and how do you remove the steering wheel cover to gain access to the buttons - why? one of the buttons is broken.

I have done it myself - so it can't be hard. But do deactivate the airbag properly. Remove fuse for a while and keep your head out of the way just in case.
There is a post somewhere on how it's done - suggest you search under "remove steering wheel" or similar.
