    Default Vy Ss

    Hey guys,

Since I got a new job with better pay, I'm looking for a VY SS or series 2.
This will be my FIRST V8!!

I want to know if there is any know problems or anything I need to check before I buy one. I heard something about piston rattles??? or piston slaps common on v8??

Anyway it MUST be a manual.

By the way how much KW VY SS's spit out at the flywheel stock??

Stock power is 235kw at the fly wheel for series 1, series 2 i think is the same.
Piston slap is common but i think it was fixed in the VY's (not too sure though).
They love a tune and exhaust, you will get an easy 245kw at the wheels with exhaust system, intake and tune.

do it man ull never look back. the LS1 is a much better package. it ****s all over the old 6's. good power, good fuel cant go wrong. just look out for the usuall stuff when buying a car. make sure u check for oil leaks and stuff as there suppoed to be pretty common in the ls1. also with the piston slap i was told it happens on cold starts and sort of goes away when warm. not sure if thats true or not but when going to look at a car touch the enigne before u start it to make sure its cold. im told its a pretty violent noise so i dont think u can miss it. but by now i think the enigne would have been replaced under warrenty if it had the piston slap issue. so should be right in that department. Also the real main seal is supposed to be an issue and is a bit of a job to fix.
good luck with it man ull love it

The piston slap was an issue in the VX's. It was fixed in the VY's.

    Series 1 = 235 kW, Series 2 = a tad more - 240 kW I think.

    Where abouts are you AttaBoy?

hey mate i just moved from a vz sv6 to a vy II ss and its bloody ****loads better, the series 1 is 235kw and series 2 is 245kw due to some minor exhaust changes. Try to llook for a series 2 with leather that way you get climate control and also more silver inserts and some other minor things, wouldn't be too concerend with piston slap as its pretty much erraticated in vy but keep your ears open for it.Good luck with it!

Thanks for the replies guys. I will look out for a series 2 VY SS.

The things I need the car to have -

    - MANUAL trans
    - Leather interior
    - V8..
    - Electric windows
    - Dark in colour

Not sure if I'll find one with a sunroof but it would be good!!

One thing....Is it 6 speed manual or they come in 5 speed?? Not that I really care.

Save a little longer ad buy a MY06 VZ SS with the L76. Know of an auto one selling with low k's for 32k. Hardly worth buying the VY when you can have something like that.

I got my VY Series 1 SS earlier in the year and it's great. Is a manual too, and loves the mods. I was looking at the VY and VZ... i got my VY with 45,000kms for $29,000 from a dealer. For a VZ it was an extra few thousand (around the $34,000 mark), but for the extra $5,000 i'd rather spend it on mods . Also be prepared to pay a little more for the manuals than the autos.

Edit: Is the L76 the 6.0L?

Now that minux sort of changed my mind, I'm now considering getting a VZ SS few months down the track. As I mentioned before I'm in no hurry to get the car but at the same time I'm hating the one I have now.

V6 is going to be history soon!!

I'm gonna be saving a little longer to afford the VZ.
260kw L76 is a good base to start modding.

VZ 6.0 would be a better choice. But a VY with an LS1 would be 10K cheaper.

The later VZ SS was the 6.0L L76 (the one minux recommended).

    LS1 - GenIII - 5.7L (VT - VZ)
    L76 - GenIV - 6.0L (VZ)
    L98 - GenIV - 6.0L (VE)
    LS2 - GenIV - 6.0L (VZ and VE HSV)

    I think that is right.

There is no real need to compare stock KW... Ok yes it makes a slight difference (for example the L98 has better heads than the rest i think), but once you mod them all and tune them all, they come out very similar to one another. They are very slow stock comapred to what they can be.

Thats what most people agree on... VY looks better than VZ. The one thing i like about the VZ though is the projector headlights that come on the SS, that the VY doesn't have.

See, thats is exactly what I want, the VZ SS front end looks way better than the VY (Personal opinion) But its also more expensive which I'm willing to wait around and save up a little more.

From my estimate it will be around November when I can afford the VZ SS.
Mind you that there is NO loan involved. All is my savings!!

(Don't worry I already bought my own investment property, now its time for a car)

Minux managed to knock some sense into me I think its worth the wait imo.

The price of petrol in November might put you off a V8 altogether :P
If i was you, i would seriously consider getting a Y series clubby over a VZ SS:
Used HSV CLUBSPORT Private Seller Cars For Sale - carsales.com.au
Used HSV CLUBSPORT Private Seller Cars For Sale - carsales.com.au

    Even Z series:
Used HSV CLUBSPORT Private Seller Cars For Sale - carsales.com.au
Used HSV CLUBSPORT Private Seller Cars For Sale - carsales.com.au

Or you could always get a VE SS for high thirties too.

Just so we have an idea, what is your budget now, and what will it be in november?

Petrol price does not bother me at all... Or I wouldn't be considering a V8. I'm keep my VS for a little while as a runabout car, for work etc...

At the moment I have 24K saved up. I'm expecting around at least 33K by November. Maybe a little more. Mind you that the budget includes to cover the paper work, rego, insurance, service etc...

Thanks for the links, very tempting to get these babies....

If I go for the VE then it has to be SS V not the normal SS. Because I like leather and other extras!! But the VE is out of my price range
Also to note that I will be getting rid of my VS at the end of the year so need a car around November - December.
