Hi,
I just got a vy s pack ute, i was wanting some advice on getting an exhaust system but some people have told me not to bother cause it will sound crap with a auto trans on a V6.
Any ideas
Yay, they're learning! lol
But to answer your question, yes it will sound like poo, but if your really keen. 2.5" is all you need, any bigger and it’s to loud.
I had a redback 2.5" mandrel bent on my ecotec vy auto. Wasn’t that loud and had absolutely no drone. No noticeable performance gain

I've got a 2.5" redback exhaust & extractors, and i've had hundreds of people comment how good it sounds, VY S 4sp here...
Nah, it's the same person hundreds of times....
Just get the exhaust done, everyone else is :P
here is my set up; press bent 2.5" str8 through muffler and rear resinator. Little to no drone in cab.

no longer a hoon by association - the commodore is gone
This is a v6 with a very nice tone. It has a lukey 2.5" system and I think it isn't running a rear resi but I'm not sure. Thats what the guy said anyway.

anyone know a cheap and easy and legal way to get a nice exhaust sound, apart from drilling the muffler?

yeh i know but are there cheaper ways? can you just replace one component cheaply?
Not really, to change the sound you have to change quite a bit of the actual exhaust. So a cat back is what most well all people do to get a more 'sporty' sound. Then extractors. Which changes the sound again.
You can take the rear muffler off but:
1. It will sound terrible
2. It will sound terrible in the car
3. Refer to 1 and 2
Look on ebay or the classifieds section on here![]()
cheers ill have a look around....
I found a redback one for $179+ postage, but it doesnt fit a series II... dunno why, email em and see

for a v6 go a 2.25 dual cat back....if you can get your hands on a hsv/ ss cat back off a v8 it will do the job well....to do the job right you will need to get extractors get pacemaker and hi flow cats......once you have done this get a cold air intake..and a hi flow panel filter ( k&N or Lukey)
it shud put a smile on your face....itl sound great go better and use less fuel
ciao
re the CAI- yella terra is abt 200...if you are handy go o hardware store and make one yrself with tubing
