Hey there guys, I'm looking at fitting a tow bar to my VY, has anyone done this themselves or does the job really have to be done my the experts? There are a few floating around second hand at a good price so I was tempted to do it myself rather than having the tow bar company charge me to fit one.
Finally, if anyone has photos or instructions that'd be cool.
Thanks again & play safe

G,day mate,
its pretty easy, just dont rush things, these are the steps i used.
-Remove all screws from rear bumper
-2x screws on mudflaps per side,
-1x screw below mudflap per side,
-2x plastic screws underneath rear bumper
-4x plastic screws on top of rear bumper
-4x 10mm nuts on inside of bumper, note: will need to remove l/h andr/h side interior boot trims.
-unclip bumper and remove.
-remove the reinforcing bar and its brakets (17mm x 19mm bolts)
(Now im not sure if you have to reinstall the reo bar over the towbar, some one may have to enlighten me on that)
-install the towbar using the original bolts of the reo bar.
-put your bumper back on (remember to take the little square plastic out for the tounge).
Its not hard, i did this by my self
Good luck
Thanks guys, sounds like I'll go that way, the stores that sell them charge a bit for them. Does anyone know if there is an easy spot in the wiring loom to tap into for the plug?
Thanks guys play safe

If you get the factoy wiring for it, it will piggyback onto your existing wiring. takes all of about 30 seconds to hook it up.
Does anyone know if this procedure is the same for a VZ wagon?? If not, how does it differ?? Cheers!![]()

Davo, in a wagon it will also depend on the towbar rating...a 1200 or 1600 kg bar are similar, but a 2100 kg Hayman Reese bar for example also has a pair of strengtheners which sit inside the spare wheel tub and bolt to the bar thru the rear panel. I have recently fitted one to my dual fuel VY II and it required some small modifications to fit, including the temporary removal of the LPG tank. It is not impossible for the home mechanic to perform. Best of Luck.
I completed the removal of my existing GM towbar on the weekend - took me about 2-3 hours but a lot of that time was either individually cleaning every part I took off or standing back trying to work out what to do next... The primary difference with the wagon that I found was the rear bar has no bolts (it simply unclips once you have undone all the screws) so you only need to remove part of the RH interior trim to unplug the harness and reconnect the tail-light (reverse if you are fitting a towbar)... Don't do what I did and forget to reconnect the tail-light - was pretty scary when I hit city traffic and realised my RR indicator was a no-go... The tow harness is connected in series so removing it creates a break in the system...
Thanks guys for all your advice![]()

Also make sure that you get the correct wireing harness for your car, if it has parking sensors you need a differnt wiring harness to a commodore with no sensors.
where did you find second hand tow bars for VY - VZ sedan's
