ok i have one mate who says the commies came out with a stainless steel exhaust and one who says they dont is it stainless steel or not (i posted in this section just incase it was diff for diff models)
Not that I know of - standard Commodore - no.
Some smicko HSV's may have.
White 05 V6 VZ Executive - Thrashed Ex Telstra car
and 3 Dangerous non ABS VN's
that was quick lol so how much would a stainless steel exhaust cost like a performance i know u dont get much but i just want a little noise lol
yup stainless steel, from VTish onwards.
Both my VN and VP still had the original factory exhausts when I got them and neither showed any sign of rust so you could be mistaken for thinking they were made from stainless since it's pretty ever lasting stuff but it's just well coated steel
its S/S but a **** grade and still rusts
cheers GM
its mild steel on most base models from vt onward the hsvs had stainless and the vz ss had stainless
OH DEAR DID I OFFEND YOU?.................................. OH WELL I DONT GIVE A FLYING F...
yeh my vy has the factory stainless steel exhaust and its done 170k now. still going strong, besides all the flanges/joins are leaking, hehe. have to replace the gaskets inbetween them or just get an aftermarket exhaust, ummmm aftermarket exhaust will have to get soon![]()
In truth, if you keep your car clean I wouldn't bother with stainless. A good quality m/s system should last for a long time. They do go down hill quickly if they are (for example) coated with mud or lots of dirt as it traps water speeding up the rusting process. This of course happens with s/s too.
I think you will find it is 304 s/s which will last a very long time if it is kept clean. All s/s will rust/corrode over time, especially if it is subjected to heat and moisture (particularly at the same time) which is what they do routinely. They will most often fail near welds etc as the heat from the welding process attracts carbon causing a localized brittle area. That area is susceptible to cracking and corrosion which is why the welds tend to rust first. This is also made 10x worse if m/s welding wire is used although I highly doubt that in the case of an OEM exhaust.
Just checked the VT, VTII, VX, VXII, VY and VE brochures and all claim to have a "long life s/s exhaust system" on at the very least the 3.8 litre ecotech motors. I have had the SS version of the VXII, VYII and VE (x2) and all had s/s exhaust systems too. I think you are wrong.

thanks for that reaper
im going to jump under a vt onwards commie to see next time i come across one, i swear ive seen a black non stainless on a vt before.
Could be wrong here, not doubting that an exhaust can rust from the outside, but was under the impression that most exhausts corrode/rust from the inside, and the corrosion is most likely to start the from the tail end of the car/cooler end of the pipe, due to moisture from the combustion products condensing on the inside of the pipe(namely water) when the motor and exhaust is cold. Cars that do only short trips in cold conditions often rusting out the exhausts in only a couple of years due to being lined with corrosive mix of water, NOx,SOx and unburnt fuel just sitting permanently in there.
Something to consider when leaving a car parked for long periods, always get the exhaust hot enough to prevent any moisture from remaining .

id agree with that
some places will have "cheap" s/s sytems, but they will in fact only use s/s mufflers and still use m/s piping to keep the cost down.
