Red face VY Squealing noise during 1st and 2nd gear change and acceleration

    Hey guys...

New to the forum, so go easy on me if this is already posted. Haven't been able to find a thread like this so far...

When my VY (2004 - 100,500kms) takes off, during the point of acceleration I have recently started to hear a squealing noise coming from underneath the car. It only seems to do it during the first or second gear changes and only makes the sound for like a second or so. Occasionally while cruising at higher speeds and then accelerating (while overtaking for example), it makes the same squealing noise. It seems to only make the noise at these times between the moment you put your foot on the accelerator and the moment of gear change to actually accelerate.

Its due for its 105,000km service which includes a transmission service, and is still under warranty with the dealership.

Anyone else come across this or have any suggestions?

my car squeals through first and second too and the rear end goes all funny lol. Anyways, sounds like a idler pulley bearing, i would normally say belt slippage but never heard of it on a V6 ribbed belt. could be the belt if its the original one its done a few K's.

If your going to replace all 3 pulleys make sure the idler pulley is metal not plastic. Plastic ones don't last

My WL Caprice does it sometimes when you plant it and it in first and it shifts quick into second. I hink i read somewhere something like this: that the belt connecting the water pump continues to spin and slips over the water pump pulley, because the water running through the water pump doesn't slow down right away (or something). Only happens for a quick second during the gear change.

Correct. Its nothing to worry about.

How is the condition of your belt? If big cracks starting to appear then its time to replace it.

Hmm... thanks guys. Yeah could be the belt, I'd imagine its the original. Checked it out but it looks ok to me (no obvious cracks or anything).

It squeals like something metal is slipping. Not grinding, slipping. It only does it for a little bit, and if you lay off the accelerator and accelerate again it stops doing it.

I'll get those couple of suggestions checked out when I take it in...

before you get new idler pulleys, make sure they are all aligned. one of them can't remember which, can move towards motor adding extra stress to the bearings and making them squel.

otherwise, temp fix is a can of belt grip.

your better off replacing them and getting a new belt if you plan on keeping the car.

Checking the tension on the belt couldn't be easier. There is a small scale cast into the mounting bracket for the tensioning pulley at the top of the belt. A small arrow aligns with the scale. If the arrow is within the larger area, ( think it's that one - haven't had to do it for ages), the belt tension is ok. If it points to the smaller area, it's clagged and needs replacing pronto.

Well... I went and got the car serviced at a Holden dealership that would honour my certified warranty, and while it was serviced I got them to check out the noise. They took it for a road test before the service and told me after that it was the ABS modulator kicking in... which showed that they didn't listen to me at all, because I know what that sounds like and it doesn't do it while driving along (it does it when you first start the car!). So I explained to them what the noise was, again, and got them to come with me for the road test this time. The car made the noise SIX times while I was driving and even with the windows down, the guy that came with me claimed to not hear the noise once! Even when I could make the car do it on cue, he just sat there and told me he couldn't hear anything!

Anyone else had issues with this kind of thing? I mean, seriously, 5 people in the car can hear it in the past with the radio on, and the service staff can't hear it with no radio on and when prompted. Not happy...

A friend of mine suggested that it may be the drive shaft or whatever...

So the car is still making the noise. Lovin't it.

i would have walked back into the service department and asked for a more competent mechanic to go for a drive with you

True... didn't have the time though. Bastards. Screw the warranty, I'll take it to a closer dealer who wants the business... Doesn't seem to be making the noise today...

    Cheers lads.
