Rocker installation issues
Hi guys,
just bought some extreme high ratio roller rockers (1.97:1) from V6 Performance Australia - V6 Power Parts, also bought the 5/16 pushrods to suite.
Installed these according to their instructions (and making sure all parts were well lubricated with oil before installing). Torqued the bolts on the rockers to 11foot/pound on a cold engine (as per instructions), put everything back together blah blah blah.
The problem I'm having is there's a ticking noise, spoke to a mate who said a small ticking noise is alright just as long as its not loud. Managed to stop the ticking noises altogether by just making sure the rockers were all straight, torqued up 100% correctly. Then decided to take it for a nice easy drive, everything was good till about 2km's into the drive I put my foot down a little bit more (e.g almost foot flat) and after stopping at a set of lights I noticed a very loud ticking (worse then before ). Slowly limped home and the noise wasn't getting any better.
Just wondering if anyone could mention some things I should be looking out for.
Car is a VY Exec Series 1
**********************
Additional information (just remembered)
the ticking sounds like it is coming from the left side of the engine bay (rocker cover without engine oil cap)
**********************
Thanks heaps fella's
Daz

Also, maybe a coincidence that this happened at the same time.
After putting the engine back together and turning it on (according to instructions, e.g. give the engine a quick start - on off kinda thing, then back on and leave running till temperature warms) I noticed that the car is saying zero fuel.
Now I know I have at least half a tank in there. I checked with the mode settings (hold down mode and settings whilst turning ignition on) and it was registering zero liters in the tank.
Any ideas as to what I should be looking for?

Maybe take your rocker covers off and see if they're all still on there properly? I just threw a set of 1.8's on my series two yesterday - bit of a ticking noise to start off when the oil hadn't made it up the pushrods, but after a few minutes it was fine

2 things: Reworked rockers have random incorrect geometry due to the way they are "reworked"
Also there is aknown issue with the heads on some Vys (1 or 2 batches of heads) that have extra casting flash in the pushrod bores. This means that on some VYs at ratios over 1.9 there can be inadequate clearance with the pushrods.
I would contact the supplier and suss their response. I'd be tipping they will very helpful and full of advice regarding this (i.e. NOT SURPRISED AT ALL).

not sure if its a casting issue, as those 5/16"s push rods I bought are supposed to eliminate that issue (if present with the stock rods).
5/16"s Pushrods for FIT 1.97 Hybrid Rockers
I didn't actually try the install with the stock rods, just installed the new ones when I installed the rockers

put it this way. if i put someone elses reworked 300,000km VT rockers on my 60,000km VY acclaim i would be annoyed at forking out all that coin and then having noises. it is common for the reworked rockers to have noise. That is why when i had my acclaim i paid a little extra and got brand new yella terra rockers, stronger material, roller tips, needle roller bearings, lightweight, comes with brand new pushrods, and a guarantee to yellaterras workmanship and precision.

spoke to them and they said that they do not recommend rockers over 1.9:1 for the VY's.
would have been nice if they noted that on their parts pages, or payed attention to the comments section in the checkout process where I informed them that I have a bloody VY... sigh
Anyway, they were helpful regarding my problem and said that it is possible to have the 1.97:1 ratio working on the VY's and gave me a few things to try (thankfully I've got a series I, they said a series II is worse):
- check for oil in the screw holes (could be creating a hydraulic lock)
- check for marks on the push rods (maybe rubbing, solution would be to grind it back a bit)
Will give it another crack tonight, damn computer was crashing so fixed that last night.

take the plugs of the coil pack, and start the car checking the tolerances between everything, while its cranking over.

I wish dude, when I called them about the noises etc I asked them about this and they said they do not take refunds! I've been told a few times now to go with yellaterra (just wish I knew this before hand ). Next car definitely.
Anywho, back onto the noise issue. I had a look at the rockers on the right side again but this time they were all good, all were torqued up nicely and there was no evidence of oil not being sent up into the chamber.
Checked the left side and noticed that 2 were loose, one more then the other. That one actually managed to damage the rocker cover (on the inside of the gasket run). Replaced the cover and re-torqued/lubed the rockers and all seems to be fine now.
Took it for a nice easy drive Tuesday after I worked on the car again (after letting it idle for about 20mins) and what ticking noise that was present wasn't always there (comes and goes kinda thing). Drove my gf home last night and the noise was hardly noticeable. Maybe they just needed some nice easy drives to work them in.
Getting my mechanic to give them the once over on Tuesday, will let you guys know
