Default Nice exhaust setup for VY SS Ute

I know there is shitloads of exhaust threads, if someone can show me a thread that is answering exactly what im about to ask, then please delete this thread and point me in that direction!

Im currently looking around for a VY or VZ SS Ute in 6 speed manual.

I've found a VY SS Ute that ill be looking at on the weekend that I think is the winner. It's totally stock.

One of the first things I want to do is the exhaust system.

I want it sounding like a V8 should - tough, loud, aggressive, mean!

I dont want it to be droning out the cabin when Im on the freeway or at any time really for that matter, but still want it to sound shit hot like a V8 does, and have the nice bubble and splatter when you back off the throttle or change gears.

With previous cars, I have searched long and hard for the right exhaust, but to always be left dissapointed, I'm pretty particular when it comes to sounds of an exhaust, I know what I want, I just dont know where to get it!

    Help please!?

Sounds good man, lovely! - Any problems with backpressure running 3" ??
Is there much difference in sound/performance running the whole di filippo system on this link below?

Its only 2 1/2 inch though but includes the 4 into 1 headers, high flow cats and the full catback

Mate I have the hotdog type on the rear of my VZ, it has a great rumble, not to loud and when you let it off has thats gurgley bubbling sound and best of all no droning at all.

Yeah I was thinking that system, the 2 1/2 inch with the hotdog setup. Are you running the Xforce brand also?
What cats and headers are you using?

Di Filippo V X-Force? Which is better? Any other brands to throw in there?

Not a whole lot, at this stage just exhaust, cold air induction, 20s, suspension & a tune.
But when the mod bug bites, you could end up buying everything under the sun, just like i've done with my evo!!

well this is the general guide:

    Exhaust, tune and OTRCAI = 1 3/4 Tri-y's > 2.5" metal substrate cats > twin 2.5" catback

    Exhaust, tune, OTRCAI, small cam (between 220-226) = 1 3/4 4 into 1's > 2.5" metal substrate cats > twin 2.5" catback

    Exhaust, tune, OTRCAI, big cam (230+) = 1 3/4 4 into 1's > 3" metal substrate cats > twin 3" catback

    Exhaust, tune, OTRCAI, big cam and heads = 1 7/8 4 into 1's > 3" metal substrate cats > twin 3" catback

    Thanks mate.
Yeah definately at this stage I dont plan to do cams etc..even though it would sound shit hot!

Thats a good guide, is there much difference in sound/note using a stainless steel catback opposed to a mild steel?

    too easy

yeah there is, the stainless sounds a bit more barky, it has its own unique sound.

Personally if you have the $$$'s go stainless, mild steel is fine dont get me wrong but with stainless it will pretty much outlast the car, sounds better and looks better

I contacted Castle Hill exhaust, they suggested the following setup to acheive pure v8 roar with the snap, crackle, pop when you back off the throttle, change gears etc..

    4 into 1 Pacemakers
Stainless steel high flow cats (didnt mention brand)
    twin exhaust Custom catback

to acheive the sound I want.
they didnt mention whether that was 2.5 or 3inch system.
    for $2300 fitted.

I will update this post when they get back to me about the size and all the rest.

that cat back would most likely be mild steel and 2.5"for $2300 fitted

You'd be looking at $3000+ for a custom stainless system

You're right, it was for mild steel.

As I asked before, whats the difference in note between the two?
Its not hard to realise I want a tough, snap crackle, pop note
Not sure if mild will do the job?

Its hard to describe on paper (i know its the net, you know what i mean lol) You can tell its a stainless system, it just sounds clean cut, mild steel sounds like it has a bit more bass, a deeper note. A mate of mine has an VU auto LS1 ute (5.7) with try Y's, 2.5" metal cats and a custom 2.5" twin exit (one each side) mild steel cat back and that thing has its own unique sound, i've never heard another LS1 sound like it. Then i've got another firend that has a 6.0 (L98) VE manual ute with 4 into 1's, 3" metal cats with a x-force twin 3" stainless twin exit cat back and its is LOUD!

But yet if both cars were covered and they gave it a rev you would be able to tell who's is stainless. Best off trying to find people with stainless and mild stell exhaust and having a listen. Dont go onto youtube to listen to them, cus they sound completely different in leal life.

But to your question, will mild stell do the job, yeah it will do the job, its just how well do you want the job done? and how deep is you pocket? lol
